That's so odd! Waitrose is a good quality supermarket mainly serving the south of England. 'Essentials' is there everyday range of goods and they probably have the best selection of cheese of any supermarket. I use exactly the same cheese you refer to for the cheese and ham croissants I like for brekky from time to time and I also top burgers with them!

Ahem - scuse me but we do have Waitrose up North! Yes they do have a good cheese selection (and some of the best Supermarket cakes - a whole other story.)

Pete - don't worry too much about 'use by' dates - some foods - cheese is one - can well exceed the dates. Cheddar is an excellent staple cheese but for me Wensleydale is close, and Canadian cheddars are very good too.

Now the bad news. No price was marked for the Waitrose and just asked the wife when she woke up. She said 289 Baht for the 10 slice pack, that's about $1.00 per slice  ... But.....it's a treat once in a while. :D FYI, all the supermarkets at all the Central stores are run by TOPS. She hasn't checked Villa or Foodland yet. :D Pete

Has anyone tried to make cheese?, or wine?

I realize it may not be the prime stuff, but I have had excellent homemade wine and cheeses here in California

Hi Pete,
I do recall getting some Australian or New Zealand cheddar in Villa Market, but I don`t think good quality cheddar would be sold in pre-sliced packs.

Two reasons to never buy pre-sliced:
1) Its often processed gunk suitable for patching cracks in walls
2) Overpriced

Well obviously it depends what you buy, but agree that sliced cheese is always overpriced. But as I don't have a cheese wire, I like to have the convenience of an ok sliced cheese for when needed.

Many would disagree Caller! OK - I'm on a level with York - but surely Harrogate has Waitrose?

TOPs is pretty good IMO. Cheese slices unfortunately aren't good in any shape or form! I guess Waitrose is packaging the stuff in sliced form for export - and as you say it's fine for a treat.
Villa should have the blocks of Canadian cheddar which is worth checking out, and should be stronger than the Waitrose grade 3. It will still cost an arm and a leg though.....

 I think you'll find a knife can be used for cutting/slicing cheese.

The new(ish) Makro has a quite decent deli/cheese counter - I occasionally get some Brie there.

Now I have not seen this for a while, BUT - Makro used to do packs of sliced Cheddar (NZ I think).

Good for burgers, far better than that processed shite and good for those of you who can't wield a knife.

Personally I think that you just cannot beat a good piece of strong, ripe, Cheddar or Stilton complemented with a bit of Cambozola all sweaty and sliding off the plate - a few red grapes and a glass or three of red wine (preferably a good Burgundy, but I'll settle for a Shiraz instead). 8)
