Employment in Hua Hin

Post by jez »

Hey everyone!

Looking for a bit of advice regarding employment in HH. I've had a look on the protected jobs page and haven't seen my job listed on the page (lift engineer). Would I be right in thinking there would be work in HH or nearby for my field? Also, what alternative jobs would be available?

Any help would be much appreciated

Many thanks

You're having an optimistic giraffe dude.

Options include.....teachers, international companies that employ you, starting your own business (probably via proxy), voluntary/charity/missionary work or being retired with loads of cash or pension and dabbling in small business to keep the wife occupied.

If you are a real engineer of some type then you'll have to go down the route of getting a job with a Thai company that wants a farang for some reason and is prepared to pay the rate.

Another opinion/aside is that your post is somewhat simplistic and doesn't take into account all the little nuances to solving this situation.

Employment in HH is much more unrealistic than many believe...unless you want to be a teacher.

Haha ok. Thanks for the heads up. I have been emailing lift companies but they're all coming back undelivered which seems a bit odd. What would you say to turning up with a working visa and looking for jobs once I'm there?

No such thing as a working visa I'm afraid.
There is a Work Permit but that must be obtained by the employer, i.e. you have been offered a job and accepted it.
Lift engineer = ?
Does it mean you design and engineer lifts/elevators or maintain/repair them?
If its design I doubt its done in Thailand, likely the manufacturers engineer/design them back in USA, Germany, Japan etc.

If its maintenance/repair work there are Thais who do that so no one will employ you when trained Thais are available. The general rule is if a Thai can do it then falangs are not permitted to do it.

Sorry to disappoint you but the short and direct answer is: Forget it. All jobs are reserved for Thais. Farangs can only get jobs for which there are no quialified Thais. Someone else outlined the situation about work permits in a seperate entry above.

Thanks very much for you help and advice you guys! Much appreciated, I now understand that my chances of getting a lift engineering job is minimal, if that! As previously mentioned I'm sure there will be Thai nationals that are lift engineers. As my job is installing, maintaining etc... I'll have to look at a different route!

Thanks again

its very hard to get proper work in Thailand but not impossible.
It took me over 6 months to find a good job and it meant moving to
Bangkok, unless your in the tourism sector then theres not much about
for farang in Hua Hin.
You try to send your CV to companies that are B.O.I approved, these companies
can hire as many farangs as they like without meeting a quota. What you have to remember is although Thais are cheaper to employ they are lazy and will steal the hole from your last Polo if you look the other way. This means that some foriegn owned companies do look to employ farangs but you must be reasonable on salary demands.
