Thai Attitudes to Sex

I keep hearing conflicting views with regard to Thai attitudes towards sex. On the one hand they tolerate prostitution, incest is apparently ripe in the villages and women may have a 'falang' husband and a Thai 'Gik', or a female may have a 'Tom' lover in preference to an unreliable Thai male. This suggests a free and easy regard to sex. Unlike our sometimes puritanical Christian-based views.

On the other hand, I'm told Thailand is still a conservative country and middle-aged virgins are commonly found.

Can anyone shed some light on Thai attitudes? (without forcing the topic into Night Crawlers).

As far as I'm aware it's like taking a pee, It's a bodily function.

It's not got the same "you're the love of my life" stigma as in the west.

You're 100% correct. I've actually had a discussion about this this a few Thais, and this is exactly the way they explained it. Sex is merely another part of life, along the same lines as eating, sleeping and etc. This is also why you'll find Thai men willing to let their wives have a Farang boyfriend, or even a wealthy Thai man on the side. for many, sex and love are two very different things.

Even though we as Farang don't often see it, the Thais are actually very open about sex in many ways.

As far as middle aged virgins are concerned.............Well I'd be surprised if Thailand is any different to western countries. On the subject of incest.........I have stayed in a Thai village, and I can assure you, a lot of what you hear/read is a load of bollocks. Sure, when it does happen it might go unreported in order to save face, but it's certainly not the norm, and to say it is, is actually a big insult to many Thais.

I certainly wouldn't wish to insult the Thais nor do I believe it is the norm. But their own reports on child sex suggest it's not a small problem.

After 32 years with Thai wives i think their attitude seems to be YES PLEASE

I also think to most sex is just a means to an end married or single male or female

as for incest /child sex i dont think it is any worse than anywhere else in the world

I don't think it's much different to the rest of the world, to be honest. There's a diverse mix of people around with varying attitudes across all the subjects you mentioned.

From my experience the younger generations are generally more promiscuous than the older (of course there are also plenty of exceptions as well) and that's pretty much in line wit the rest of the world too...

Not too sure about this. My Mrs fully accepts me emptying my bladder a few times during a night out on the town, but God or Buddha help me if I emptied anything else

Thais don't have 2000 years of Judaeo-Christian stuff topped by a dollop of Queen Victoria and they can separate sex and love.
Good in some ways but it also opens the door to irresponsibility and huge societal costs deriving from it.

From what I understand, maeng-daa is a very offensive word that if said to a Thai man would end up in fists being thrown at you. Maeng-Da is actually a bug that lives in certain fields mainly in Issan, I have never eaten one but have seen bar girls purchase a bag on more than a few occasions.

I have this on authority from 2 different teachers and numerous Thais. Someone let me know if this is wrong ? Maeng Daa is slang for a very lazy man that stays at home while his wife is out working, a bum, a freeloader in other words. And as my friend would say... "Them's fighting words!"

I'd have to agree with them.

A Mia Noi makes alot of sense if that's their attitude, as long as it's not in the mother of your kids face.

I'm alright, mines only 26, but if that day comes............
