I have to own up to a private supply of a few Oxo cubes!
I've seen gravy powder in Villa before - it's not a bad substitute.
Maybe JD will know................

I thought that you could get them in Hua Hin Ham and Bacon. Give him a call, I'm sure he will help.

Re: Cottage Pie
Stock cubes of all kinds are available pretty much everywhere - Knorr seems to be the most popular brand, in light green packs (with a prominent Thai script version of Knorr). You can probably buy these in most Mom and Pop stores.
Having said that, I've just seen a pack of (Ah!) Bisto gravy powder in the kitchen!
EDIT: Terry, if cottage pie is made from beef and shepherd's pie from lamb, I'm calling yours "cock-a-hoop pie"...

Stargazy pie - apparently the pilchards are gazing at the stars. One of the most unappetising dishes I've ever seen! I'll stick to pasties...

I think that maybe something more akin to 'pi55head pie' would be more appropriate.dtaai-maai wrote:........... Terry, if cottage pie is made from beef and shepherd's pie from lamb, I'm calling yours "cock-a-hoop pie"...
On account of that is the state that I get in to when cooking it - with the wine
Oh how I miss Keith Floyds' "Little Slurps" - not a great cook but a superb 'kitchen entertainer' who produced most of his stuff using a Wok and a bottle or three.

We have Beef, Chicken, Lamb & Vegetable OXO stock cubes at our place on Soi 41, also a complete selection of Bisto Sauces in every flavour.

Re: Cottage Pie
Are you from Mousehole (mowzal)? Beacause thats where the pie is from? It has a nice story attached to it.Khundon1975 wrote:Being Cornish, it's Star Gazy Pie for me.
I only know it because the far west of Cornwall - Penwith - is absolutely my favourite place on Gods earth, just came back from there, actually.
The Ship Inn serves a nice pint as well!
"Star Gazy Pie is a dish unique to Mousehole (a fishing village in West Cornwall with a most beautiful harbour). Prepared in the Ship Inn, ate on 23rd December- Tom Bawcock's Eve. Long ago Winter storms had prevented the fishing boats putting to sea. In a lull in the bad weather one of their number Tom Bawcock managed to catch enough fish to prevent the village from starving. A pie of many fishes was made from the catch -Star Gazy Pie.
Nowadays the village is famous for its Christmas Lights A spectacular and dazzling Display of Illuminations from Dancing Reindeer to Santa Claus, to Christmas Pudding complete with sprigs of holly. A church with music playing. A cross with two angels. And not forgetting a Star Gazy Pie in lights".

Got me all nostalgic there Caller.
The Mousehole Christmas lights are a joy.
Will be back on The Lizard in November for a couple of weeks.
Just hope the bass are still biting.
Looking forward to a few lunchtime pints and pasties in those beautiful Cornish villages.

"Are you from Mousehole (mowzal)?" You got it in one Caller
The family lived in that area and also above the Minack theatre but mainly St Buryan.
The pie may look a bit weird but not compared to some of the stuff the Thais eat.
It actually tastes great, if made correctly.
I could just go a PROPER Cornish ice cream with a big, thick slice, of fresh clotted cream on top right now. If someone opened a shop selling that in HH, they would be onto a winner.
Halcyon days.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.
Re: Cottage Pie
Above the Minack theatre? Now that's got me intrigued. I haven't been there for a while, but I can't recall anything above it, bar a couple of isolated houses? If so, you must have had the most incredible views, also overlooking the Logan Rock?Khundon1975 wrote:The family lived in that area and also above the Minack theatre but mainly St Buryan.

Straw Dogs terriitory, eh?

Agree about the ice-cream, not so much for me, but a certain Thai lady I know stuffed her face daily with the stuff!
