It's easy to forget that Italy is a relatively young country (they recently celebrated 151 years post-unification) and the northern part of Italy was governed for a long time by the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is responsible for a lot of crossover cuisine. Their version of the Wiener schnitzel is known as 'Cotoletta alla Milanese' and is veal cooked with the bone left in. They do a Cotoletta alla Bolognese, which is probably the tomato sauce based one you mention.

Wien, being the German for Vienna, is certainly where the best schnitzel can be found and I highly recommend Figl Müller as one of the most traditional places to go, if a little touristy but charming all the same. They are also surprisingly filling..!

As a long time sponsor of this site I really have to promote our three kind of pork schnitzels that we have on our menu. Wienerschnitzel, Hawaiian schnitzel and Jaegerschnitzel. They come with brown sauce(gravy) or mushroom sauce. Different potato alternatives: mashed potato, boiled potato, fried potato, baked potato or french fries.
Some of you have tasted them some have not. Give it a try!
