Breakfast, lunch and dinner: Have we always eaten them?

Post by pharvey »

An interesting article which lead to my question.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20243692

Personally my eating habits have changed throughout the years, but I've never been one for breakfast - more a "Brunch Man"! But when working on site etc. has always been coffee for breakfast, no lunch then dinner.

Certainly don't eat (or live) healthfully (which has to change), and more or less just once a day.

I don't always practice it but I'm a firm believer that your heavy meal of the day should be breakfast as your body can work off of the energy provided throughout the day. I don't feel like lunch at all after a heavy breakfast, and then just eat a light meal in the evening. Who wants to go to bed with a kilo of food in your stomach? Kiss of death IMO.

Location plays a part though. Here in the tropics I have always eaten less than in a 4 season location. I assume the cold weather makes you burn more calories thus making you feel more hungry as compared to here. Pete

Since my operation earlier this year, I have to eat small healthy(ish) portions, 3 times a day - no option.

In my younger days, 4 meals a day, with snacks - hence the need for the operation this year.

I eat 3 times a day - unless beer gets in the way.
Breakfast is normally around 5am with lunch sometimes as late as 2pm and dinner around 7pm ish. Asleep about 10pm on a good day.
I've heard people say that to eat less and more regularly is better than the "traditional" way but I do need my breakfast as it sets me up for the day and whether I walk the beach, go swimming or play golf, I like the food to settle before exercise.

Indeed, I didn't elaborate on that aspect in my above reply. If it turns into a beer day I stop eating completely with the exception of a chunk of cheese, a few peanuts etc., as the day/evening goes on. Don't do too much of that anymore as the next day is lost. 8 cans now used to be 16 and even with that I could function well with about 4 hours sleep. Those days are gone forever I'm afraid.

Interesting this came up as I asked the wife to pick up a dozen smalls on her way home this afternoon. Maybe I'll just put them in the frig and forget about them. Pete

I've always been a great believer in the old adage of 'breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and supper like a pauper', the only problem is I've hardly ever been able to adhere to this wise advice. Hence I've gone through various stages of eating a huge breakfast and bugger all else, to eating nothing for breakfast and an apple for dinner and all permutations inbetween. Obviously a balanced eating regime is the most sensible option, but I'm a firm believer in eating when I'm hungry and not just becasue the clock tells me I should.

Dinner ...normally roast meats of some kind......apple pie...trifle...typical English....this weekend I am going to buy some pheasants. There are loads around where I live, also lots of road kills! I am not tempted to try them though

Because I'm basically a lazy person, my preferred routine for many years was to eat once per day. I was still obese, though. <sigh>

What I have started, and I seem to be losing about 1kg every two weeks if I stick to it, is spreading out the courses of that single meal with three hours between. e.g. I'll eat a salad or other vegetables. Then, three hours later, I might eat some meat. Then three hours later, I might have starch. Then three hour later, some fruit. It's tough to stop after one course, and the first hour is temptation city, but the second and third hour are not difficult. Often I'll go more than three hours between courses, but I do make myself continue eating that day.

I had read that if you cut back from more frequent meals, to (as I did) one meal per day, the body goes into starvation mode and clings to every bit of energy it can (in the form of fat.) The goal, apparently, is to let the body know it will be getting fed regularly and often, and to minimize insulin spikes. Not sure if that rationale is valid, but the system seems to be working for me.

So, I (aspire to) eat 3x to 4x per day, but only one meal.

Only problem is, I get lazy and slip back into 1x/day feasting. And/or too frequently going out with friends for dinner and eating much larger portions of more courses and consuming copious amounts of alcohol. After such a lapse, it can take me a week or more to get my weigh back down.

I peaked at 109kg maybe a year ago after some serious binging. I came back down to a plateau of 101-103kg by eating smaller portions, and only 1x/day. After about six months of my new regimen, I'm currently around 94kg.

My sister-in-law, a nurse and osteopath, who is annoyingly right on health matters; advocates that one should:

- Eat like a lion at breakfast..

- Eat like a lamb at lunch..

- Eat like a mouse at dinner..

Personally, however, I find no need for lunch in a tropical climate, and elsewhere find a full and convivial dinner with friends (well washed down..) preferable to a solitary fry-up in the morning..

In Thailand I generally have a moderate breakfast (but never a 'Full English' - which just doesn't suit the climate..) - and a decent dinner.

In England, I start the day by assessing my appetite and work load - if the word 'light' applies in both cases, I start with orange juice and coffee, and wait until I feel hungry before eating anything else.

Lunch is then optional, and rarely substantial, and dinner tends to be my biggest calorie intake of the day - despite received advice...

- And when I want to lose weight...

..I starve myself..
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

A cooked breakfast is great when someone else cooks it and you have time to eat the damn stuff! So my only 'cooked' breakfasts at home are toast. Work days I take a cereal bar to eat on the bus....non work days it's often meusli - home made - (the bought stuff is like chewing sawdust) with greek yoghurt and a bit of honey. Or hard boiled egg with Ryvitas.
Packed lunches have gone pear shaped the last few weeks with wholemeal sarnies. I need to get back into the tuna salad habit.
Main meal is always in the evening and really not healthy enough at the mo but I limit the chips to no more than once a week and tend to eat chicken, pork of some sort, or prawns. Stirfrys, noodles and currys mostly.
It's nice to be able to eat less in Thailand and find decent fresh fruit. When there it's prawn and rice soup first thing, which takes so long to get through it's already time for lunch.
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

The correct diet, as taught to Indian schoolchildren, is here... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-20354669
