Beer!! Alcohol percentage?

Post by sandemb »

Any observations on beer alcohol percentage in TH? Someone told me Singha is worst, can vary between 4% and 6%. Would rather stay on something consistent so can be responsible for for my own actions :naughty: !
Never had a prob with Heinies,Tiger or others - only Singha!

Singha has always given me a tw@t of a hangover - and I'm not talking drinking stupid amounts. I try to avoid these days, but when drinking out, it's the most widely available. Leo is a decent tipple, but beware the "Super" which from memory is something like 7%+ - head banging stuff.

My beer of choice in Thailand is Archa - around the 5% mark alcohol wise, and half the price of Singha when buying in the markets - decent taste too. Unfortunately, you do not see it regularly in the bars.... maybe the likes of JW can shed some light onto why this is.

Just as an aside..... how about a pint of "Armageddon" brewed (or should I say distilled) by "Brewmeister" in Scotland - 65% ABV!!

In 2004, the company introduced Archa beer, at 5.4% alcohol by volume (abv). The beer won a gold medal at the 2007 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA). In 2006, the company launched Chang Light, 4.2% abv, and Chang Draught in bottles, at 5% abv. Light beer 4.2% - ? Any comments on taste?

Chang Classic is 6.4% if it's a hangover that you're after!

I came across Archa in a Chiang Mai bar a year or two back - decent stuff and it seemed to be selling quite well. If it's available in HH at a sensible price, the bar owners should give it a try..

I used to guzzle loads of Singha - until I realised why I was always putting on weight in Thailand - far too much sugar.. :|

Chang seems to rot people's brains, so I tend to drink San Mig or Leo now..
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

Singha is 5% and Chang 6.4% - I seem to remember a few years back they were both 1% higher.

I prefer to drink Singha as I don't particularly like strong larger but, as well as being stronger, Chang is usually cheaper by an not inconsiderable margin.

I find that I get worse hangovers from Chang, going from one to another during the course of an evening always seems to produce worse hangovers and of course if you tac on a few sangsom and cokes to the end of the evening you can pretty much write off the next day!

Archa is available in the 7 Elevens and the Mom and Pop stores. It's a bit cheaper than Leo usually, but you sometimes have to root around a bit to find it.
Both are decent beers IMO. The inconsistency of Singha certainly used to be a problem, which is why many people stuck with Singha Gold - although I'm not sure that was much better to be honest. But I thought the brewery was supposed to have sorted it out?

One of the difficulties for HH bars in stocking Leo and Archa is not so much availability, but catering to tourists, who expect to get Singha (and Chang) because they tend to associate those more with Thailand. Then you need Buds, and San Migs for the tourists who usually go to the Med, and often one or two German beers as well, plus Heine which is always a staple.
So you can easily find yourself with 7 or more beers all juggling for chiller and storage space, and usually all in cans or bottles of course.

never been in a bar in HH that does not have Leo. I would appear to be the biggest seller in town by a wide margin- that is coming from a load of bar owners that I know

Chang has a rep of no one knowing quite what the strength is, not what it says on the bottle but what is actually in the bottle

Singha just has a bitter taste to me , so i steer clear

Chang Export, which is about 5%, is getting more popular now. In my opinion it's the best tasting of the local beers by far.
