Biscuits and Gravy

Restaurants, food, beverage, hawkers, and local markets and suppliers. This is the place for discussion on Hua Hin's culinary options.

Au contraire. For me, it's quite the opposite. No matter how it's dressed up I can't get excited about which is the best brand of oil to make chips.

Anyway, mustn't derail this most gripping of topics. :D

Some folk are food lovers. They talk about nothing else. 1000+ views on dried peas seems a smidge high, though.

By this stage on one of your interminable "Current Affairs" threads, wouldn't you be advising the negative poster to look elsewhere?
This is the way

Mr P :tsk: you make it sound as if most members of the forum are obsessed with talking about food :? This is not the case at all. Eating is very much a part of life. If you take the remote highland forests of Papua New Guinea, for example. They live by hunting, gathering plants and growing crops. I would imagine that even they discuss how to cook certain things they hunt or grow.
It may seem trivial to you, but sometimes people like to have lighter issues to discuss. I think the forum has a good range of topics. I know we have a few things like fish and chips etc that go on a bit, but nevertheless is quite informative.
A lot of countries enjoy cooking and eating out. It is a very good way for families to gather together, eating and discussing their day. If the conversation should go to "Gosh, these chips are nice tonight, have you used a different brand of cooking oil?" ...what the heck, does it matter?....no, it doesn't :) They may have also discussed Libya, typhoon in the Philippines and other current affairs during the course of dinner as well.
I think if someone wants to post about "Biscuits and gravy" it's ok...if it is of no interest to you, there is no obligation to post a reply. :duck: Just stick to the topics that interest you. I don't post on football, cricket, golf etc, but I certainly would not knock the topics.
By the way, what is the best brand oil for chips? :duck:

The last time that I was there, I bunch of them were still eating each other!

I do? Come now. I'm obviously teasing. There is no need to defend your interest at all. Food should be appreciated as well as eaten in a peaceful atmosphere, far away from politics.

It does still surprise me how many inquiries we get in the forum from people who are looking for all kinds of foreign food.

Folks: YOU ARE IN THAILAND - FAR AWAY FROM HOME.

While Thailand is (unfortunately) becoming more intertationalized with KFCs and McDonalds galore, etc etc, you should still not expect to find native dishes of your home country here.

For Gawd's sake support the local economy, eat the local stuff. Love it or leave it!

And ya don't git grits here neither, homeboy! :D :D

To surprise you even further I am English (that would be a person from England), when I lived there I tried food from all over the world, now I am in Hua Hin I see no reason not to continue. Biscuits and gravy is a dish I have heard of but have never tried, I was hoping maybe I could change that.

And ya can git grits here, ignoramus ;)

I'm not trying to hijack this thread, but while we're on the topic of Western/Foreign foods, does anyone know if any of the bakeries/supermarkets sell fresh scones, and if so, can you get clotted cream here?

Fresh scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream......delicious. :thumb:

PS: Also looking for sour cream.

Sour cream - just get some regular cream and add a bit of lemon juice (lime would probably do and is much cheaper.) It thickens the cream and is probably the closest you will get. I know you can get it deliverd from Cornwall but maybe not that far!
Strawberry jam is no problem - the local brand is fine - I just can't remember the name - comes in drinking glass shaped jars with plastic lids.
Scones - I think I'd try baking my own to be honest.

Mr P you never fail to amaze me! Surely a health conscious chap would be very picky about their frying oil?

And those biscuits and gravy sound disgustingly unhealthy - and very good! Food wise I think HH, like other Thai cities, has gradually responded to demand over the years. More farang - more demand for farang food - more supply. That's business. Maybe the result means that some farang are less adventurous food wise now, but it's their loss.

Oh, so you are English? Why doesn't that surprise me. You travel to a small holiday resort in South East Asia where you expect to find a special food from a remote area in the Deep South of the U.S.A. To put it politely, you are really an optimist. Wasn't it Noel Coward who wrote a song about "Mad Dogs and Englishmen"? FYI: Kidney pies are largely available in Hua Hin, just in case you didn't know..
