Xmas dinner, Thai style..?

Post by uncle tom »

OK - some of us spend Christmas in Blighty, before escaping this rain-sodden land for our tropical winter sabbatical..

..others spend Xmas in Thailand, and try to bring a little bit of Blighty to the table for old times sake..

- But has anyone tried to re-invent Xmas dinner, with premium Thai ingredients to the fore?

Did anyone gather their family together yesterday for a sumptuous feast, and watched their hungry expectant faces, as you carved the dog?
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

Sadly no. Had to make do with Sontam, chips, spring rolls and spicy fried fish. No dogs around to be grilled. Oh, hang on, Butterfly bar had something that resembled a pig on a spit but it could have been........ :duck:

Nothing special........kids were in school; the wife was at work, etc, etc, etc. Instead of a traditional Xmas meal, settled for a wholesome vegetable stew instead, and damn fine it was too. I had roasts all my life, and to be honest, it's the last thing I want to eat. In fact I used to dread Sundays and Xmas lunches as a kid.

A friend in HK with a Chinese g/f cooked a traditional Christmas dinner. As the guests were arriving and he was behind schedule, he went for a shower etc and asked her to start to prepare the food for serving. She cut all the turkey, roast potatoes, sprouts etc into small bite sized pieces so that it could be eaten with chopsticks.

I'm not sure that it qualifies as a Thai Christmas dinner but for the first time in many years I did not take home leave at Christmas and return to the UK.

I simply could not face cooking the full monti Christmas dinner. Instead we organised a Thai - Western BBQ with family, friends and Neighbours

Proper charcoal barbecues and great mixture of seafood, meats (no dog!) and salads. Everyone helped with the cooking and cleaning up after a very long and enjoyable evening.

In the spirit of Christmas with good people, good food, more that adequate supply of Christmas cheer. A really great day!!
