Pangasius Fish

As I am mostly alone I sometimes buy ready cooked food, especially fish. I bought some of this yesterday from BigC in Bangkok. It is evidently farmed in Vietnam, as is some other fish that they are selling. It is also called: Pangasius, Vietnamese River Cobbler, Basa Fish and White Catfish, Tra, Gray Sole.

It was OK and I am still kicking, but since looking it up on the Internet it gets some bad press.
Has anybody tried it? It is avery "fleshy" fish,but a bit oily and bland tasting.

They also have another ready to eat white fish that is labelled; "Crap"! And in fact they are correct!

The Pangasius is John Dorey, and also available at all Makro supermarkets - very good value and makes excellent battered fish and chips !!

I can buy Vietnamese Pangasius here in Europe and I use it for making Tom Yum Pla.
I also looked it up on the internet and there seems to be two sides to the story, one being that it's farmed in unclean rivers and is unhealthy and the other being that it's being rubbished by people in Western fish farming who don't like the competition.
As I don't cook enough Tom Yum Pla to poison myself and it's economical and conveniently available in the supermarket around the corner, I'll continue using it for now.

Sorry, I do not follow this. John Dory is a salt water fish, where as Pangasius is a fresh water speicies similar to a catfish.

I don't know much about fish but certainly from what I read they were being farmed in cages along river banks.

Beg to differ

The Pangasius available at Makro is none other than the Mekong Catfish and sometimes substituted by the Sutchi Catfish. Both species farmed extensively here in S.E.Asia

Fore sure it is not the John Dory or John Dorey.....................

So reading Winkies link, the dory mentioned in the F&C threads is what?

Vietnamese River Cobbler has been sold by Tescos cheaply in the UK for ages and they tell you on the label what it is. I like my fish to taste of fish, not covered in sauces and chilli, a little lemon/butter will suffice thank you, but even I had trouble getting any flavour out of this fish, so this one is probably best wrapped in batter or sauces, IMHO!

Well done Winkie you have cleared up the confusion.

As to what is sold in the HH F & C shops under the Dory name - well I don't think it comes from deep salt water !!

Pangasius is available in Finland in some shops. I buy it quite often and have found it good with Thai and Chinese dishes.

Caller we bought some smoked river cobbler at tescos, it was diabolical, not fish taste at all just the taste of smoke. John dory is expensive but very tasty.

In NZ we have several different types of Dories as well as John Dory.
They are a deep-water species, most of them part of the Oreo family.
Smooth Dory, Spiky Dory, Black Dory, to name a few.
