Hua Hin Cricket Sixes, Apr 5-10 2013

Post by buksida »

A record number of 21 teams will compete at this year's Bangkok Post-Hua Hin Cricket Sixes, to be played April 5-10 at the polo grounds of the beachside Dusit Thani Hotel.

As expected, the tournament boasts a strong Australian presence, thanks to regulars Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), Euroa, Cluden, Willsmere Wanderers and Gold Coast Tigers, and three new teams: Baden Powell and Western Plains from Victoria and the Perth-based Black Swans.

Three teams from Indonesia, one from Bangladesh and four from Thailand complete the line-up.

Also returning are former Australian internationals Mick Lewis and Shaun Graf, this time in the colours of Euroa Cricket Club. There are also first-class cricketers in David Bandy of Western Australia and Queenslander Glen Batticciotto, who will play for the Thai Thevada, while 21-year-old paceman Daniel Worral of Victoria and South Australia will represent the MCC in the Cup.

Only the MCC is fielding teams in all the three divisions of the competition _ Cup, Masters and Veterans _ and they again appear the side to beat. Cluden, meanwhile, will field two teams, both in the Masters division _ Cluden Cricket Club and Cluden International.

In the Cup competition, teams play each other twice with the top two going into the final. The Masters field of 11 teams is divided into two groups of five. In the first round, each team plays every other team in their group for a place in the last four.

Six teams are in contention in the Veterans division _ restricted to players 50 years old or more, with each team allowed to field one player under that age _ and the same format applies.

Matches in the second or semi-final round will be played under the knock-out system.

Leading the home challenge are the Thai Thevada and Thailand Colts _ the Colts won the very first Hua Hin Sixes when they upset the former in a nail-biting final.

A youthful side boasting home-grown cricketers captained by the diminutive but hard-hitting Bobby Raina, Thailand Colts will be eager to make amends for a poor showing last year when they lost all their first-round matches. They have won the Cup twice.

The Thai Thevada, with Batticciotto and Bandy in their midst _ alongside the Bangkok-based quartet of Nayeem Iqbal, Brett Taylor, Anthony Slattery and Richard Bowater _ seem a better balanced side this year and have what it takes to go all the way.

Narayanganj Cricket Association from Bangladesh present as a team of former national-level cricketers out for a bit of a run around and are, like Bali Senia from Indonesia, on their maiden foray here. Lardna Follies, who won the Masters two years ago, and Larngna Follies, playing in the Veterans division, are the other teams from Indonesia.

Among their ranks is diplomat-cricketer Brett Farmer, who hasn't missed a single Hua Hin Sixes.

Back too is Bob Lloyd, former vice-president and senior patron of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, again with a strong Australian contingent of players, their families and supporters.

The resort town, with a rapidly growing expatriate population, has seen the likes of Barry Richards, Mike Gatting, John Lever, Colin Miller and Jonathan Trott.

The Bangkok Post is keen to reach out and connect with Hua Hin as develops into a sports and tourist destination of international repute.

Thanks for the reminder. :thumb: Tom, who runs this, does a great job and if you are a cricket fan, like me, it's a super event to attend. The Aussie commentators are witty and irreverent and the final dinner is worth attending too. Last year Mick Lewis clean bowled one player and nobody saw the ball. He was that quick. The format means there's no lack of runs.

If you read the Bkk Post on the subject and on the other thread it says vets have to be over 50 not 45, but can field one under age player only ? :?

Yes, I went along to this event two years ago to watch Tom's team play and it was certainly entertaining! This is a fun event and well worth a visit.

Batticciotto takes Thailand Colts apart
The Thai Thevada, powered by Glen Batticciotto, overwhelmed young guns Thailand Colts twice yesterday to virtually assure themselves a place in the Cup final of the Bangkok Post-Hua Hin Cricket Sixes being played at the polo grounds of the Dusit Thani Hotel in Hua Hin.

With no other teams in the Cup division in action yesterday, the Thai Thevada have won four of their five matches so far, and meet Euroa Cricket Club today in their last group game in which teams play each other twice, the top two going into the final.

For Thailand Colts, making a belated entry to the tournament, it was an abject lesson in cricket which showed what separates boys from men, a lesson they must learn quickly if they are to mount a serious challenge for the trophy they have won twice. Today they play Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) and Euroa, each team twice.

Batticciotto again shone with the bat in both the matches, scoring 34 not out in the team's total of 77-1 in the first match, and 36rtd in the second in a total of 88 for no loss, clubbing seven elegant sixes en route to remaining undefeated in the tournament.

David Bandy stroked an elegant 34 and Nahim Iqbal 16 in the same game. Thailand Colts could only muster 35 runs in the first match and 41 in the second.

Narayanganj from Bangladesh were the other team making a belated appearance at the tournament.

They lost their opening match to Lardna Follies but made amends in the second, beating Cluden Cricket Club in a low-scoring game. Lardna Follies then beat Cluden International in the last game of the day.

Elsewhere, Soi Cowboy Vets assured themselves a place in the last four with convincing victories against Bali Senia and Hua Hin Hopalongs, while Larngna Follies also won against the same teams.

SCORES IN BRIEF
Masters division: Cluden International 31-4 (Beard 11, Howard 6) lost to Narayanganj Cricket Association 35-0 (Joshi 30)

Lardna Follies 57-0 (Gupta 34, Elliott 9) beat Narayanganj CA 53-2 (Durjoy 22, Akram 7)

Black Swans 54-1 (Cutbill 21no, Weatherall 12) beat Cluden International 52-0 (Green 27no, Fiker 21no)

Veterans division: Soi Cowboy Vets 59-0 (Parsons 24no, Currie 11no) beat Bali Senia 58-3 (Williams 23, Harrison 16)

Larngna Follies 64-0 (Shafil 41rtd) beat Hua Hin Hopalongs 63-0 (Vine 21no, Edwards 10no)

Soi Cowboy Vets 63-2 (Parsons 26, Karnasuta 9) beat Hua Hin Hopalongs 37-2 (Young 14, Edwards 8)

Bali Senia 44-2 (Harrison 12, Brooking 12) lost to Larngna Follies 45-1 (Emzin 18, Rizvan 14no)

MCC lift Hua Hin Sixes Cup
It's rare that a subplot outshines the main event, but that's what happened at the polo grounds of the Dusit Thani Hotel yesterday.

Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) beat Thai Thevada in a one-sided Cup final of the Bangkok Post-Hua Hin Sixes in what was an anti-climax to what had preceded it, when Baden Powell and Larngna Follies, playing in the final of the Veterans competition, dished out a thrilling tie to send the match into a bowl-off or extra over which Baden Powell, on their first foray to the tournament, won barely.

Elsewhere, Willsmere Wanderers from Australia upset Narayanganj Cricket Association from Bangladesh to lift the Masters trophy, while Lardna Follies, aided by Varun Gupta who scored 37 runs before retiring in the final against Black Swans from Perth, Australia, took the Plate.

In the Cup final, MCC, batting first, posted a challenging 78 runs for the loss of two wickets, built around Aaron Boyle's 38rtd, scored with the help of five sixes.

In reply, Justin Graham, bowling the first over of Thai Thevada innings, clean bowled their opener Glen Battacciotto with the first delivery, after which Thai Thevada were never allowed to recover and eventually lost by 24 runs. Euroa Cricket Club finished third place in the Cup competition ahead of Thailand Colts.

But the entertainment of the day was the final between Baden Powell and Larngna Follies which went down to the wire and full of drama.

Baden Powell batted first scoring 76 without loss with Ross Graham retiring on 35 and Martin Massey, their anchor in this tournament, hitting 34 not out.

When Larngna Follies batted, Delany hit a quick 38 runs before retiring. Graham then bowled a miserly fourth over conceding just four runs.

Shaful however hauled Larngna Follies back wih some powerful blows. But with the scores level and one ball remaining he had to retire as his individual score was 35, the maximum allowed in the tournament.

In walked their captain Brett Farmer and was clean bowled first ball, forcing a bowl-off, which proved just as tense. In the extra over, Larngna Follies, batting first, scored eight runs, but Baden Powell outscored with a ball to spare.

Aaron Boyle of MCC hit the most sixes and was declared best bestman; Paul Kelly (Willsmere Wanderers) and Sean Sturrock (MCC) shared the best bowler honours; and Justin Graham (MCC) was named the player of the tournament.

I attended the last two days and thoroughly enjoyed it. My dog strangely took a liking to one of the umpires and ran on to the field twice, during the final, much to the commentators amusement. Thankfully, they didn't throw us out!

The Aussies are always great fun. MCC were awesome. Will definitely be going next year. :thumb:
