Tasty disgusting Thai food

Post by richard »

Well having travelled around different parts of Thailand and lived in a rural Isaan village I've eaten some strange meals. Ants and ant eggs. Raw and cooked just about anything that at some time of it's life moved. Any manor of leaves and twigs but last night capped it all.

Had just had sontam in Romantic bar washed down with a glass of red wine and decided to take a stroll round Poolsuk to show I was still alive. Stopped in Hogs Breath to say hello and with no customers at hand the girls were busy filling themselves with Lao Khow and all manor of Isaan food to occupy their time in their playground. A plate of moving food was set before me together with a spoon. It was dark but I could make out some chilli's and a sea of fish sauce with some translucent things stirring. I closed my eyes and devoured a spoonful. Delicious i said but what was it? 'Goong Ten' Goong Ten they kept saying as the contents of the bowl appeared to jump out on to the table. The bowl was rapidly devoured and a second appeared. I was sure this would mean a night on 'Gods big white telephone'

Googled it after a few enquiries and got this

With a name that literally means "dancing shrimp," you'd better believe this dish is alive.

A frenzy-filled salad, goong ten is mixed in a metal bowl while the transparent little shrimp attempt in vain to wiggle their way to freedom.

Why some people love it: I'll be the first to admit that a spoonful of the dancing critters is both entertaining and delicious. After taking a bite, the shrimp rupture with saltiness and climax with a pleasant crunch.

Today I felt no ill effects but erred on caution and went to Joe's place (Lins) for F&C with curry sauce. I'd try it again though as it was as it says, crispy and tasty

'Dancing Shrimp' or 'Disco Prawn' - very common in Issan
Surprised you haven't seen it before Richard.

I've read about that before but never (nor would want to) tried.

Am I right in saying there's some sort of Alcohol in it so the prawns are literally pissed?

PS, there was a brilliant documentary on the BBC recently called "can insects save the world" about eating insects and if the west could adapt for the sake of protein in the future.

It was mainly in Thailand with a quick hop to Cambodia, well worth a watch if you can find it on the Internet.

It's on iPlayer if you can view it.

Sometimes alcohol is used - but lemon, chilli, fish sauce, Issan herbs, corriander, shallot ,spring onion and mint is more common.

I guess if you are doused in that lot whilst still alive you'd dance too

Dancing shrimps used to be one of my favourites dishes when we had darts nights at New Cowboy Bar in Bangers, would wake you up after two many ambers.

Tasty.
Everyone tells me the same. My problem is the distance between the plate and the mouth. My hand is willing and able, my eyes focus on the little critters and I'm paralyzed. I have no cognitive functionality.... I watch my son eat them in total bliss. I guess that I must be a pussy but for heaven's sake give me a steak :D :D
