How do you set up a PayPal Account?

Post by Big Boy »

I need to buy something off of eBay. The only way I can do it is by setting up a PayPal Account.

I've followed the process box by box - no problem initially. Then it comes to the 'how you're going to pay' section. :banghead: :banghead:

I tried using my Thai Debit Card detail - doesn't want a Debit Card.

I then entered my English Credit Card detail. I pressed the button confidently, and got the rejection that I had to use the address the card is registered to (Southampton). I re-entered the Credit Card billing address, but when I got to Province, it only allowed Thai Provinces. (Laptop being thrown out of the window smiley).

I really need this item fairly soon. I can buy similar in Hua Hin for stupid money. I could get somebody to bring me the item back from the UK, but the cost would be treble (still cheaper than Hua Hin by about £219).

Can somebody please tell me how I can get my PayPal Account enabled?

BB

I cannot remember exactly how I set mine up. But I do remember that it was a nightmare as they sent a code to my UK address to activate it....

Which was quite handy..... As I was nowhere near the UK....

I think I'm going to have to either:

- Bite the bullet, and pay UK prices; or

- Pay megga inflated Hua Hin prices; or

- Stop checking my blood sugar levels - probable outcome as my sugar levels have been fine for the last 15 months.

Option 3 is sounding good at the moment. PayPal is sounding like an impossible option.

I used mt Kasikorn web-card to set it up, it has a credit card number but isn't actually a credit card - Paypal doesn't know the difference.

The other way is to use a proxy with a UK IP address, then it will allow a UK address.

Be careful though, some things bought on eBay go "missing" in the Thai postal system, and if it is something heavily taxed here like a camera they may open it and charge you 40%.

It's nothing attractive - just blood test strips. However, pharmacies here in Thailand want stupid money. I'm definitely thinking option 3 will be the best option - my blood has been normal for so long. I have a 3 monthly fasting blood test at Petcharat hospital anyway, so if things start to go awry, I can reconsider then.

It's no wonder that Thais have such a high diabeties level - the average Thai will never be able to check their sugar levels.

Getting back to your cost of things in Thailand thread, this is definitely not what I would consider a luxury item :?.

Hi BB,

My Blood-Glucose meter recently bit the bullet, and the LHG purchased another, complete with 50 test strips for 120 RMB (approx. £12) - the strips themselves are also around 120 RMB separately. I can see if a set can be sent across to you if you're interested.

I don't know if this is of any help or relevance, but I have a regular fasting test at HH Lab Center which I think covers blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides and it's not much more than 200 baht.
In and out in 5 minutes and they can email the results to you.
You wouldn't want to do that every day, but once a month should keep you honest.

A very kind offer (and very cheap for that kind of equipment), but I'm convincing myself that after being perfect for 15 months, why am I even bothering? If things start to go wrong, my 3 monthly check at Petcharat is going to pick it up. No serious harm will happen in 3 months.

If I didn't have to go to hospital every 3 months for an injection anyway, that would have been perfect - thank you.

Still makes me wonder why PayPal/eBay make things so damned difficult. I've got the money, and I WAS keen to spend it. They just won't let me :?

You're most welcome. :D
I have mine done first thing in the morning in advance of a visit to my doc at Ratchaburi. I could get it done for free (on insurance) there, but for me it's worth paying so I don't to have to fast all day and then sit around for a couple of hours with 5,000 others waiting for the results.

At Petcharat, I arrive at 8 and have my blood tests done. I then go for breakfast. When I get back, it's straight in for my consultation (including blood results), and then into the nurses treatment room for my injection. Usually home before 11.

BB,
what is your preferred product and price range as I'm back in town next week and may be able to pick up what you want on the way in from Perth.

It's OK, thank you very much deepee. This episode has made me question why I'm doing daily tests when my sugar levels have been perfect for 15 months. Unless something untoward is picked up at a subsequent blood test, I just don't believe there is any benefit in me continuing with daily tests.

Precautions against fraud. I set up an account before leaving the US. Accessing it from here the first was such a long frustrating process (because I'd changed mailing addresses and changed banks since it was set up) that I googled how to set one up from Thailand. Don't remember any links but do remember two things. First is to accept it will be a slow, difficult process. Once you've accepted that, start with the most recent set of instructions you can find - and keep reminding yourself that the instructions were probably written after the fact by someone who had done it once.

I think that I've worked out why I couldn't use my Kasikorn Debit Card, which is quite embarrassing - I've only lived here just over 12 months, and when I moved here we initially went into rented accomodation. It was while at the rented accomodation that my bank account was created. We are now in our own home, but haven't advised the bank of our change of address. Therefore when PayPal is validating the card's address, it goes tilt.

Still, the good news is that the delay has made me reconsider the need, and I've realised daily testing is overkill at this moment in time. The money is better with me as opposed to PayPal for items that I don't really need. Of course, I might get chastised when the hospital find out that I've stopped daily testing.
