ATM fees increased to 180 baht?

Post by bapak »

I know that we have discussed this previously... the Baht 150 charged by the local banks for each ATM transaction but I can find no sign of the previous topic.

Anyhow, today I went to a ATM at Krungsri Bank and noted with surprise that the fee is now Baht 180.. Have I missed something?

The internet and other forums would be all over this. Google shows nothing about it except our posts from here. Pete

Nope there is a post on the biggest english Thai forum site in the country we are not allowed to publish links however!

[Mod Edit: post edited, if it is that big it doesn't need help with traffic from our little forum. The discussion is here, where it has been asked by a member of this forum.]

Same same happened to me yesterday, and that even at an ATM way out in the boondogs somewhere near Cambodia. Suppose the Bangkok Post has no mention of this?

If you go to the Eon Bank (I think it's japanese) located on the 3rd floor in Market Village, there is no charge for drawing money from a foreign bank account. Been using it ever since the 'Yellow' bank introduced a charge, which was the last of the Thai banks to do so.

We all go to MV at some time. Just needs a bit of planning!

I take it this is for ATM withdrawals from foreign banks, not Thai bank accounts?

Furthermore, I am no banker but I would assume that banks make some good income from exchange rate on their transaction. So why should there be any fee? Have not witnessed such a fee in any other country that I have visited.

I think, to be fair, the exchange rate you get from banks is pretty favourable? Anyway, if they dropped the fee they'd probably just alter the rate you're getting to compensate - I guess it encourages you to do your transactions in larger amounts, which is probably better for the banks.

Would be interesting if somebody were to do a side by side withdrawl from AEON and then another bank directly after, and note if there are any significant differences in the exchange rates provided.

Also worth noting is some ATMs give you the option to convert to your local currency before withdraw. If you are taking out a large amount then this is almost never a good option. If you're taking a relatively small amount (perhaps an "emergency 1000" to get you through the rest of the night..), and your bank charges you for foreign money transactions, then you might find it worthwhile doing taking the ATM up on its offer.

I have used a Thai ATM card in both Vietnam and the Philippines and was charged a 100 baht fee both times if it is the same.
