Local Laws on noise levels

Post by certocito »

Not sure if this is the right place to ask - does anyone know the legal requirement for restricting noise during night time. I know the bars etc in town have some restrictions but I am trying to find out if there is a law regarding noise in a village environment. Seems that someone in ours is advertising a property online for weekend partying and so far the first takers have been partying till 04.00am - so is there anything the neighbours can do about it (from a legal perspective first!!).. ???

When you say "village", do you mean a traditional Thai moo-baan or a farang development?

If it's a Thai village, the first man to see is the poo yai baan.

Appreciate that, but unfortunately it's a farang development.

Guess you have tried the "quiet word in ear approach" or is it not an option?

Forget about the laws in Thailand. Nobody cares about them. I had a similar problem once and "diplomatic means" brought me nowhere. So what I did was to get hold of two ranking policemen, paid them 500 THB and they solved the problem. Exactly what they said or did I don't know, I wasn't there.

I do not recommend this procedure if the noise problems are caused by Thais. They will feel that you intervene in their privacy and may retaliate in ways you don't want to be part of.

Thanks for the answers. Not sure which way to go about this. Thai owner renting out their house for parties, loads of young Thais turning up for the last three nights...

Difficult situation, but don't bother researching noise level restrictions. Even if there does happen to be a noise abatement law here, you won't find anyone to enforce it.

If you don't have a Thai wife and/or some influential local Thai connections, then I can't think what your next step would be.

There must be other neighbours in the same boat - are any of them Thai? Because this is essentially a Thai problem and will require a Thai solution.

Just one point, is it actually the owners of the property doing this or someone who has rented it from them? We had something similar many years ago in a house opposite us near Hua Hin hospital, where the person renting the house would lend it to his Bangkok friends for large parties at the weekends. When we pointed this out to the Thai owners of the house, they quickly terminated the lease.

I wish there were some laws on noise - wherever I have chosen to live in this country I seem to attract neighbours that want to spend endless months building things, and the only tool at their disposal is an angle grinder ... the incessant daily din of which is enough to wake the dead and drive me to send the owners to the afterlife.

Why not just ask if you can join the parties as well. The sound of young people having a blast beats the crap out of 467 million soi dogs barking all night, and a lot more pleasant than listening to all the tings, dings, pings, twongs and dongs which dominate any Thai TV programs, along with mandatory hysterical screeching women. :D

Just gate crash their parties and enjoy yourself. Who knows; you could even end up with a beautiful young maiden in your arms before the sun comes up. :thumb:

You can cope with most night noises but when that deep base starts thumping and your tile grout starts breaking off, it's tough to mask it with a ceiling fan.

Loved your description of Thai TV. Barmy, isn't it.

There is a great solution that I found over time for cases like this - Earplugs - sold everywhere even in 7/11 on KaoSan road in BKK. I'm not joking - they Do work well and you sleep like a baby next to any party.
