Caught on video: Firearm assault on foreigner in Phuket
A Russian man had a gun pointed at his head by a Thai man, in what appeared to be a misunderstanding over a woman in Phuket, and the incident was caught on video.
According to The Phuket News report on Wednesday, Vasiliy Tubaev, who came to Thailand on April 5 and rented an apartment in Phuket, got to know Ms Karn, a Thai woman who lived in the same building. He said he knew that Ms Karn was living with another man he was told was her brother.
The Russian said he heard somebody knocking loudly on his door and trying to open it, but he left it locked and the visitor went away.
Mr Tubaev said he later set up his video camera, pointed at the door, and when there was another loud knocking some time later he pressed the record button before opening the door.
There was a Thai man at the door who pointed a gun at him, forced him to his knees and told him to stay away from Ms Karn because she was his wife and that he must go back to Russia.
The man slapped and hit Mr Tubaev several times and pressed the pistol against his forehead before leaving.
Police arrested the Thai man, who was not named, three days later.
The Russian told The Phuket News that Ms Karn's boyfriend had offered 10,000 baht in compensation, but that he refused to accept the money.
The case is now going through the courts. Mr Tubaev has now left Phuket.
Police told The Phuket News the gun was a replica, and could not fire bullets.

When I watched this, I couldn't help thinking that it was a 'B' movie with really bad actors. It just seems a tad contrived. Why did he open the door? Why did he set up a video camera? Why didn't he shut the door on the 'gunman'? Why isn't he looking just a little bit scared? I certainly would be, if someone put a gun to my head. I'd be pleading for mercy (in any language), and be extremely apologetic. Certainly the 'fight' or 'flight' emotions would have kicked in. Why doesn't he say anything when the 'traumatic ordeal' is finished? Too many questions, and probably very few answers...

Apparently the gunman had knocked at this guys door earlier and the guy ignored it. On the second occasion the guy decided to video it fearing something sinister!
I wonder about the long term effects this incident will have on this young man?
What sentence if any the gun man will receive?
Phuket is going doen the pan! Last night some guy stabbed to death in a bar fight. Give me HH anyway!

Police call for video removal
Phuket's police chief said on Thursday the case involving a Russian man being assaulted and held at gunpoint by a Thai man was a personal matter and called for the removal of the video of the incident from YouTube, saying it might upset Russians or create ill-will towards Thais.
Pol Maj Gen Chote Chawalwiwat said the case was only a personal conflict stemming from the suspect’s discontent after he had learned that the Russian took his wife to Khao Lak, a famous tourist destination in Phangnga province.
He warned that the incident caught on the video and posted on YouTube could escalate into dissatisfaction among Russians toward Thais.
He also called on the concerned authorities to remove the video from YouTube to avoid causing possible damage to Phuket and Thailand.
Pol Maj Gen Chote said police had taken swift and decisive action in the case and charged the suspect on all offences possible. The Phuket Provincial Court will announce its ruling on the case on July 13, he added.
On June 6, Vasiliy Tubaev, 27, who came to Thailand on April 5 and rented an apartment in Phuket, got to know Ms Karn, a 21year-old Thai woman who lived in the same building. He said he knew that Ms Karn was living with another man he was told was her brother. Police identified the woman later as Wilaiwan Kengdiew, 21. She was wife of the suspect, Patchara Utsaha, 37.
The Russian said he heard somebody knocking loudly on his door and trying to open it, but he left it locked and the visitor went away.
Mr Tubaev said he later set up his video camera, pointed it at the door, and when there was another loud knocking some time later he pressed the record button before opening the door.
Mr Patchara was standing at the door and pointing a gun at him. He forced him to his knees and told him to stay away from Ms Wilaiwan because she was his wife and that he must go back to Russia.
The man slapped and hit Mr Tubaev several times and pressed the pistol against his forehead before leaving.
Police arrested Mr Patchara on June 12. He was charged with home invasion, assault, causing fear and panic and holding someone against their will.
Police said the gun was a replica, and could not fire bullets. Mr Patchara works as the manager of a boat engine oil company, Thai Pramual Oil, and his job requires him to often travel to islands to meet customers.
He admitted the crime, saying he became angry after discovering that Mr Tubaev took Ms Wilaiwan to Khao Lak, police said.
After the attack, Mr Tubaev had a headache but recovered in three days. There were no injuries to his body, according to a doctor who examined him. He has now left Phuket to stay in Krabi.

Brilliant;
Mr Tubaev has now left Phuket and can be found (quite easily) in Krabi.
Probably Ao Nang!

The Phuket media is all over this and many people have suggested the video must be fake ignoring the fact that nobody gains anything from a staged video like this unless the guy is not Thai but working for the Vietnamese Tourist Association.Vital Spark wrote:When I watched this, I couldn't help thinking that it was a 'B' movie with really bad actors. It appears he put up the camera because he was expecting the guy.
My personal theory is that he expected (he is a first time visitor) a fair man-to-man fist fight.
So he wanted to be able to proof afterwards that the Thai guy attacked him and started the fight (which he -being twice as big as the Thai guy obviously expected to win).
Then the gun was a genuine surprise. How can we know how someone reacts when a gun is pointed at him. Most of us only seen this in movies. You start sobbing and crying, you beg for your life, you panic? Who knows, but knowing your life is at the mercy of an angry guy's pointing finger I think staying put like a rabbit in the headlights and doing nothing to avoid provoking the gunman is not all that unnatural behaviour.
We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.

and Samui, Pattaya, Hua Hin etc. I think the Thai's and violent thugs want foreigners to just stay indoors and out of sight.Brit Jim wrote:This video has received extensive coverage worldwide and I had the same thoughts as you! I agree Buksi this almost knee jerk reaction to censor is ludicrous
To my mind the real culprit is the woman she told the Russian her husband was her brother.
Her husband should have had strong words for her not the Russian.

The Russian guy will gain quite a bit if his Youtube account has Google ads enabled and that vid goes viral ...Roel wrote: The Phuket media is all over this and many people have suggested the video must be fake ignoring the fact that nobody gains anything from a staged video like this...

Was the upper-half of the video always blurred? Or has the censorship already taken effect?

Edit: The video was posted by Phuket news hence the blurring....

Yes agree alot of these places are changing for the worse but believe Hua Hin is still one of the safer cities in LOS.Name Taken wrote:and Samui, Pattaya, Hua Hin etc. I think the Thai's and violent thugs want foreigners to just stay indoors and out of sight.Brit Jim wrote:This video has received extensive coverage worldwide and I had the same thoughts as you! Phuket & Pattaya have the highest tourist death rates over here almost daily news. Two people drown in Phuket today!
Each to their own but for me Hua Hin works perfectly compared to the hustle and bustle of London!
Thai / Phuket Authorities are doing every thing in their power to remove this video from U Tube.
I think the damage has already been done!

Re: Caught on video: Firearm assault on foreigner in Phuket
This kind of incident happened every day
with Thai and Thai so with Thai and Farang so Farang and Farang but many incidents do not get up on YouTube. I think for Thai people are more serious or stressful than Farang since there is no much way out in thai community than Farang.(Farang just leave Thailand and finish but Thai still have to face with their community).
