Debit card cloned again...

Post by uncle tom »

For the second time in less than two years, my debit card has been cloned..

First time the cloned card was used in Cambodia, this time Malaysia..

And despite taking care to not use ATMs that might have been guilty in the first instance..

Both times Barclays fraud team spotted the irregular transactions, arranged a speedy card replacement and immediate refunds - I can't speak too highly of them.

Having two current accounts with separate debit cards has also proven its worth - again!

But it looks like the fraudsters have netted over five hundred quid from the two hits, making me wonder who ultimately stumps up for the losses - Barclays, or the ATM operators?

- Anyone know?

Surely the banks offset this kind of cost with insurers? Must admit it's something I'd not thought about, and it does seem that Barclays might be an exception by covering debit card fraud. Usually UK banks just seem to cover losses on credit cards. But they must make plenty from us these days anyway with negligible interest rates and charges for breathing their air.

Is that statement definitely correct? Very worrying if it is. Is debit card cover available?

***Barclay's arranged a speedy card replacement ***

Did Barclays post your new card to Thailand? The reason I ask is that Lloyds TSB will not post bank cards or PIN numbers to me here in Thailand.

Barclays told me after my card was cloned that they also would not post replacement to thailand.

Mine was cloned the week before I flew back but was cancelled after around 2 weeks here.

In my case barclays said unusual activity was spotted in eastern europe, all credit to them it cost me nothing and as I was without a card they allowed me to put my barclaycard in credit so I still had a card without interest being charged.

When my debit card was cloned and used in the States, Lloyds Tsb didn't refund the cash immediately as they said they have to wait for their insurers to approve the refund.

So, yes, banks do insure against fraudulant use.

So how does this work? If the claims from the banks exceed the insurance premium the insurance company surely is not interested in a deal. On the other hand if the banks have to pay more premium than the amount they lose through ATM fraud it is not a good deal for them and they will not be interested in the insurance.
Or is this one of the examples where financial institutions make money by simply moving it around and creating tax deductions? Anyone?

I use a regional bank back in the states. About 6 months ago I was working on a ship. We were in port so we would leave the ship after work and do our shopping and drink some beers. The day before we left I got online to check my bank statements. I was surprised to see money was being withdrawn all over Europe and I was nowhere near Europe. At the same time money was being withdrawn in Europe it was also being withdrawn from the atm by me. The bank never noticed it for some reason but I sure did. Who ever was taking money in Europe got $3001 from me. I made a call to bank and they closed down the use of that card. I told them which were my withdrawals and which were not. It took a little over a week but all money was returned including atm fees and international atm use fees. This was a debit card not a credit card.

Most banks will not have insurance that covers for 500 GBP incidents - their deductibles will be set much higher, otherwise premiums to great. ATM Operators will have insurance that covers the Banks for things like their outsourced staff skimming from cash-filling operations.

For your 500 quid loss I would say the bank writes it down as external fraud loss. Unless they can tie it to a series of incidents that then brings them over their deductible limit to make a claim.

Did Barclays post your new card to Thailand?
On both occasions I'd recently returned from the LoS when the hit occurred.

AFAIK Barclays will only send mail to the account holder's primary address. I don't know if they will accept an overseas address for a UK current account - I havn't asked.

Incidentally, I first got the idea of having a second debit card after seeing the hassle a guy suffered when the notoriously hungry ATM in Bintabaht ate his card.

I initially asked for a second card on my current account, which Barclays weren't able to offer, but they had no problem opening me a second current account, with it's own debit card.

I strongly recommend doing this, if you're going to be overseas for extended periods.

I have both Barclays debit and credit cards, which are always sent to my home in Thailand, without issue (of course now my primary address). They also recently sent me a new card reader-token for use in online banking and I hadn't even requested a new unit.

When I was in the UK, I thought that they were very customer unfriendly but since moving to the LOS thay have been very helpful...strange!

My credit card has been cloned and used for repeated cash withdrawals from San Paulo hospital.

I do not use my card for cash withdrawals but use for retail purchases and hospital services.I had a blood test done at SP late July and since then 9 cash withdrawals have been made from there. BEWARE

Are the bank and/or police interested in trying to find the perpetrator?
