Names of these 2 fruits?

Post by Homer »

I've occasionally seen the one on the right in markets. It looks like a cross between a reptile and a hand grenade. Inside are many white, juicy, teardrop shaped pods with black seeds.

Never seen the orange one before. It was hand delivered from a friend's family garden. Flesh is dry, almost fibrous and tastes, I kid you not, like pumpkin pie filling.

Pretty sure the one on the right is a custard apple, but never seen the other one.

Agree with DB on the Custard Apple, but unfortunately can't help with the other one either...... Shall ask the LHG.

Yes, the green fruit is a custard apple - in Thai 'noi na', quite a common nickname. Don't know what the other one is, neither does Mrs D-M.
This is the way

Homer,

It is a Mamey Sapote. They are quite popular in Cuba.

agree with dannie boy and gandalfinthai
1st one is nooi naa or custard apple
and 2nd mamey sapote quote from "tropical food grower" site : In the cuisine of Mexico,Central America and the West Indies, there is probably no other fruit that is so loved as is the mamey sapote! Its creamy texture and sweet almond, caramel flavor have been treasured for centuries in this part of the world, and only recently is being enjoyed in other areas such as Australia,Israel, and the Philippines.
Once you have tasted the creamy mamey, you too will come to love this excellent fruit.

Just one bite, that's all it took. Thank you for the info.

Not that I've looked too closely, but are these mamey sapot generally available in markets in the HH area and do they have a Thai name?
