Searching For Intelligent Life

Post by cheapercharlie »

Online: I don't think I'll find it, in person, in Thailand. I have two suggestions for people who still have a few brain cells to rub together, and desire some honest, but not hateful, commentary.

Voranai Vanijaka writes for the Bangkok Post, and you can read his thoughts on Thai/Eastern culture, online.

Theodore Dalrymple can also be found on the internet. He has great insight of British human behavior ... from being a psychiatrist in the penal system.

What essayists/ authors do you suggest to your friends? Take advantage of the HHF , and add something positive... to the mix.

Those of us who have a few brain cells and have used the forum for some time will be well aware of Voranai, as per this thread.

Well, I'm pretty much buggered since I'm down to my last brain cell, and it's also not in very good condition any longer.

If one had brain cells one would not be on here posting to an imaginary wall, we would be out with real people having a good old chin wag

Four additional posts, and no one had anything positive to add. I think it confirms my suspicions. I don't engage in conversations (chin wags, Steve) with expats, anymore, as I don't suffer fools gladly.

Intelligence was the operative word in the post, if you missed it. I have enough casual "chin wagging" while teaching, and helping run a guesthouse. Backpackers with no work history and limited education tend to repeat the same mantras. Thais ? Forget it.

I would suspect that this forum is designed to help newer arrivals, and not just for the disgruntled that have been here for ages, hence my example ... Voranai Vanijaka: I was just looking for someone else, SIMILAR, to read online, in the evening. It was an example. I don't want to engage in a debate.

If you need further clarification, google:

"Andres Oppenheimer: Authoritarian leaders breed corruption"

He is an expert in Latin America culture... (Miami), but this article sounds just like Thailand.

If you don't have anything to add ... then don't.

A phrase usually uttered by the arrogant or the insecure.
G. K. Chesterton had the best advice on suffering fools gladly. He put emphasis on the gladly. When you’re with fools, laugh with them and at them simultaneously: “An obvious instance is that of ordinary and happy marriage. A man and a woman cannot live together without having against each other a kind of everlasting joke. Each has discovered that the other is a fool, but a great fool. This largeness, this grossness and gorgeousness of folly is the thing which we all find about those with whom we are in intimate contact; and it is the one enduring basis of affection, and even of respect.”

The forum has plenty of us fools, cheapestcharlie, but it's sometimes a bit short on tolerance and respect, as you seem determined to illustrate.
This is the way

I agree, there isn't anything in this forum for me. I need to find a better one. Trolls like Bristolian don't bother me. They just confirm that they are trolls. Thailand is a European loser's paradise. TRUE, I have no more tolerance for Thailand. It is just a quick stop long the way. Life is too short. I didn't mean to be disrespectful: I am sure most of these trolls have valid info for the newcomer... like... which masseuse gives the best han*-job. My posts have probably increased readership: You're welcome: :neener:
