What about the price for somethinhg like a Wave 110cc ?

When you buy a new bike, or re-insure one with yearly renewal, then you should get the standard Thai-style insurance with it, nothing to get wildly exited about but will cover you for about 15K baht in hospital fees at any hospital, plus theft risks (which are very real here). Worth reading up/enquiring about how to claim though with the place you are buying it from, or the Mrs or girly friend will know how to.

Might be wise to have other cover as well but you will still be able to use the standard one you get with the bike too if anything happens.

I think a full coverage policy for an MC is difficult. I seem to recall that you can get a policy directly from the dealer for the first year, but then after the first year you can no longer get theft insurance. I'm not sure if higher liability/collision/medical payment coverage can be extended beyond the first year or not. The mandatory government insurance continues each year and I believe the small premium is paid as part of the registration renewal. The rules and whats available may change with the larger and more expensive bikes. Pete

Just asked the wife about this. The Honda bike we have can get theft insurance for the first 2 years only. No other type coverage available except the government mandatory insurance per the dealer she used. I asked her about big bikes like an expensive Harley. She didn't know. Pete

The CTPL (compulsory third party liability) you must have by law. You can only pay the roadtax if you show a valid compulsory. After you paid the roadtax, you receive the sticker with the year on it.
Looking at third parties, this compulsory only covers third party bodily injury or dead and this for very low amounts. This means that if you drive somebody in the hospital and the hospital bill is higher than the coverage, you will end up paying by yourself.
Third party property damage (like damage to a car you hit) and damage to your own motorbike is not covered at all under the compulsory.
You can have this covered by taking an extra insurance. There are 3 options:
-3rd class: covers third party bodily injury/death and third party property damage to high amounts. Also coverage for personnal accident and medical expenses for 1 driver and 1 passenger of the own motorbike and bailbond.
-2nd class: Same coverage as 3rd class but also coverage for fire and theft of the own motorbike.
-1st class: Same coverage as 2nd class, but also coverage for damage to the own motorbike.

If you use 1 of the opions above, you will still need to have the compulsory also.

Hi Matt

Are you in the same building as TLC?

Think people need to get the best cover possible out here. Too many incidents with injured parties facing high hospital bills which vary from hospital to hospital.

Be safe!

Yes, same building as TLC, 5th floor.

Most readers here have a sufficient healthcare insurance (if not, that should be your first priority) and damage or loss of your own motorbike is overseeable. But bodily injury/death or property damage of a third party can really bring you in problems and the coverage of the compulsory insurance is absolutely not sufficient. A good extra 3rd class insurance is the least you should get (about 3200 to 3450 baht a year, extra coverage till 1,000,000 baht a person for bodily injury or death and 1,000,000 baht for third party property damage). This insurance you can also take for big bikes for the mentioned premiums.

First class insurance (also coverage for fire/theft and own damage) regretfully is a little bit expensive. Standard 8 to 9000 baht for a "small" motorbike.
But if you need a house and/or contents insurance also, it might be interesting to tell us so. Recently an insurance company opened the possibility to have a first class motorbike insurance for a very low premium (depending on the motorbike 3200 to 3800 baht a year) if you take out their house/contents insurance also.

Question about that roadtax/insurance sticker for motorbikes..(every year)
Is it still possible to go and get sticker / stickers for motorbike even you not have that / those bikes with you?
Last march I was getting stickers for 3 different bikes and any of them with me. Everything OK, only green books with me.
Has it changed now? Because my friend who is taking care of our bikes and stickers, say that he must take both of bikes to show them before can get those. Very strange if so.

Hi Angelique
It depends on the age of the bike. If it is older than 5 or 7 years (and I think it is 7 years) you need to bring it to be inspected.
