echo that as one suggestion

could be:

WW1 or WW2 collection and scrapping of church bells for the bronze (used in gun barrels and machine parts).

Interesting factlet - churches were allowed to keep at least one of the smaller bells per church to ring out in case of an invasion (WW2) or a Zeppelin attack (WW1).

or

the remains of a bombing of a famous cathedral (Coventry or Dresden, or Monte Cassino perhaps)

SM is closest, when he says WW2.
I am not sure what they were used for.
Maybe you can tell me where there were photographed and where they might have come from?

Collection of church bells after the bombing of Dresden?

Interesting stuff - seems the Nazis were avid bell collectors, so could be anywhere

Are they the bells of Alsace Lorraine mentioned in the article?

Not sure about Alsace Lorraine, but I think these bells are from all over occupied Europe waiting in Hamburg after the war to be returned to wherever they came from.

Found a link earlier, but can't find it now!
This is the way

Yes correct, the people of Hamburg thought they were bells from Hamburg. They were however looted by the Nazi's from France, Belgium, Holland and elsewhere, carried off during the German occupation.

Marks to SM and DM as I think SM covered it in his post and DM is quite correct.

Who said this and when?

"The annals of war at sea present no more intense, heart-shaking shock than this battle, in which the qualities of the United States Navy and Air Force and the American race shone forth in splendour. The bravery and self-devotion of the American airmen and sailors and the nerve and skill of their leaders was the foundation of all."

I know you didn't ask 'about what' but I'll guess it was about WWII in the Pacific, could it be Admiral Nimitz ?

It was Winston Churchill after the Battle of The Coral Sea and Battle of Midway Island.
