What similar English words do you have a problem with?

Post by PeteC »

Many on here seem to have a problem with "to" vs "too".

Me, I have a block concerning affect and effect. Always have since a kid and even today need to really think about it when composing something. Pete

I swear I'm getting typing dyslexia as I get older - I type a lot, but I have to concentrate and correct much more nowadays.

To answer the question:

'discreet' and 'discrete' always get me muddled.
Fortunately, it doesn't crop up very often...

One error I notice quite frequently on here is the use of 'loose' instead of 'lose'.
This is the way

A common one I see is brake and break particularly with my Chinese colleagues (although I have to admit their English ability far exceeds my few words in Mandarin).

'who's' and 'whose'

Not similar but I tend to use 'that' unnecessarily. e.g. 'I told him 'that' he was old' instead of 'I told him he was old '.
