if you need an online visa card just get a k bank account and upgrade the card in the atm machine to online card and you can pay anything online with the card

Yes, you can get a banker's draft in foreign currency and certainly in HK dollars. When I renewed my ex-wife's passport earlier this year, we first used her Thai Visa card. We heard from HK that Thai cards will not go through their system. So we went to Bangkok Bank and drew a banker's draft in HK dollars and EMS'd it to them. No problem. Passport returned from the UK in a couple of weeks.

As I must get around to doing this myself, probably in the New Year, I'll watch this thread with interest.
I have a UK debit card (visa) but I heard that debit cards weren't accepted in HK, only credit cards. That seems strange to me and I don't know if it's true.
How do I pay the people?
As an aside, I was back in England a couple of months ago and looked at getting the passport renewed then. Wasn't a million miles away from Peterborough so geographically there was no problem. However, the Passport Office wanted another 100 odd quid to process matters within 4-6 weeks. I just couldn't bothered with that and as I was there for only a month, the 6 weeks didn't sound good.

I used a UK issued Visa Debit Card to pay HK and it worked fine, as long as your Debit Card has the Visa or MC logo, it acts like a credit card but with a zero credit limit, so the funds must be available.

I use that card for all online activities, I just transfer in a little more than the transaction is likely to be before making the transaction, that way should anyone misuse the card information they won't get a lot out of it.

Good your passport arrived so quickly especially with the seasonal overload on postal systems.
Just another reminder to those, myself included, who'll be renewing from now on - the renewal documents etc now have to be sent to the UK not Hong Kong any more:
