BBK or not BKK
BBK or not BKK
What will the new airport ID code be when she opens?
Yes, the code BKK is moving to the new airport. Don Muang is going to be allocated a new code, as it will still be an airport in some capacity, VIP flights, or whatever. I tried to find out what this would be a couple of weeks ago but it hadn’t been published then, I will have a look later, time permitting.

I have read that as well. I have tried both NBK and BKK on several cheap airline sites. Both codes are accepted, and both give details of the exact same flights to 'Bangkok Airport'I read somewhere that Don Muang will keep BKK. The new airport will be NBK

Hi Gutte,
Suvarnabhumi has been given the temporary IATA code of NBK to be used for route proving flights whilst Don Muang is still open, when service commences on the 28th of September it will take over the code BKK.
IATA codes are used mainly by airline ticket reservation computers, so this shouldn’t cause any problems.
Flight planning, flight management systems, and air traffic control use four letter codes issued by ICAO, these are VTBD for Don Muang, and VTBS for Suvarnabhumi. It will only be necessary for IATA to issue a new code for Don Muang if it is to be used for commercial flights, at the moment that seems not to be the case; there is a plan to use it for VIP flights as a military base.
