Australian nationals are one of the many nationalities that qualify for the 30 day visa on arrival.

It's not a visa on arrival it's a visa exempt stamp that is good for 30 days.
Don't ask for the visa on arrival because you'll be led into an office, fill out forms etc etc
Australians are exempt for visas, so 30 days on arrival.

People with passport from the following countries gets a visa exemption when they arrive in Thailand, 15 days if by land and 30 days by air (Citizens from U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan can also get a 30 day if arriving by land):

I understand that the 30 day 'visa exempt' also applies to land borders as well as airports. Changed a few months ago I believe.

That is only for G7 countries as I mentioned in the parenthesis above. That was in effect from November 1, 2013.
