Singha bottle size

Post by Kraka's Dad »

Just back from HH. The first thing I noticed at the first meal out was that the size of a large Singha had reduceed to 500 ml from 630 but no reduction in price.
Found cases of 630 ml Singha in Tesco for drinking at our appartment :D
When did the size change?
Solved size problem when eating out. Drank Chang no size change there .

Good spot! Noticed that myself but couldn't remember whether Singha had always been 500ml. Like you, drank Chang instead: 630ml and at a more potent 6%.

Funny you say that. I was out with a friend a couple of weeks ago, and he was saying the bottle size had shrunk. I wasn't convinced  .

That's an old trick that food and beverage companies have used in the U.S. for years. Slightly reduce the size of the package (and contents) instead of raising the price and very few people notice. Look for the other beer makers to follow if it doesn't hurt Singha significantly.

I don't think it's about avoiding an increase to the price as such; if you look on the shelves, the price of a "large" Singha has now been brought down to the same as a "large" Leo or Chang, where as before it was a fair bit more expensive.

The change happened about 3 months ago. The new bottles now say "Premium Quality" or something similar on them, my girlfriend originally brought one home when they first came out (and were being put on the shelf along with the 660ml bottles, as opposed to instead of them) believing it to be a new sub-brand.

Watch out, though. A lot of restaurants are not adjusting their prices and still charge the same price as always for a large bottle of Singha

By the way; a large Leo is actually 640ml now compared to 660. Don't know when that change happened, or if it's always been like that.

That's good, 500ml is quite enough. Sadly the micro brew movement has not happened inThai, one can guess why, power of the big-boys. There are a few brewpubs. The one in the HH Hilton is not great, but makes a nice change

I've changed brands - it was very annoying when I found shrunken bottles that cost almost the same. Did however find the original size in one or two places upcountry.
Seven-eleven carry Tiger Beer which is my backup choice; Heineken is just a little too expensive and bland for my tastes.

They don't cost almost the same - not in stores anyway. Singha has always been the most expensive of the Thai beers. The big bottle has decreased in both size and cost. I'm pretty sure ml for ml you're paying about the same.

Big bottles of Singha are not available in Bangkok and its surrounds any more, but I did get some the other day out in the boonies. 58 baht a bottle unchilled. 500ml Singha at 7-11 was 54 baht.
Leo chilled (in the boonies - you can't get anything else anyway) was 65 baht(!).
So if the big bottles are still available I will still drink Singha. Tiger (at the 7-11) was a baht or so cheaper, will be checking out Foodland prices this arvo.

It is still a matter of preference, I actually like Singha. The other local beers give me a slight headache the following day.
Was spoilt for choice last week in Singapore - beers, stout and cider - just need to get over the sticker shock first. :)

Not sure if anyone has noticed but the strength of Chang has also dropped it was 6.4% its now 6% and I think the bottle is slightly smaller 640ml to 630ml I think.
I noticed last month along with the smaller Singa bottles.

Price check!!! At Foodland just now.
Tiger 630ml unchilled 55 baht
Singha 500ml unchilled 54 baht (!)
Leo (looked like 500ml but couldn't find quantity on the label) 53 baht.

Came away with half a case of Tiger (obviously..) :)
