Faulty ATM
Faulty ATM
Went to a local ATM earlier this morning. I use it pretty regularly.
Went through the usual procedure and waited for my money. And kept waiting and waiting. Eventually, I hit "cancel" and a short time after, the screen said "timed out. Transaction cancelled" and returned my card.
Went to another ATM successfully but when I looked at the receipt my balance was lower by the amount I'd keyed in at the first ATM. But the cash wasn't dispensed.
I'm hoping that computers etc will realise the mistake and I'll get a credit back to my account in due course but has this happened to anyone else before and how did you go about sorting it out? Assuming that it's not done automatically.
Should I report it anywhere. Of course banks are closed until Thursday, I believe.

Re: Faulty ATM
Hi Lomu - I'd go to your branch as soon as they re-open - take that second ATM slip with you (it should give a rough idea of the time the first transaction failed) and detail of the ATM that failed.
I had a similar prob years ago here in the UK - used an ATM at a branch of my own bank and when I got the next statement realised that the amount withdrawn had been debited twice. So clearly the error hadn't been picked up. It was sorted later when I queried it though.
This was years ago - the technolkogy should be better now but I certainly still wouldn't assume you'll get a credit automatically! The ATM you used had probably just run out of cash over the hols.

Go to the bank asap and report it there - happens quite often.
Additionally avoid the Kasikorn ATM near soi 41, it swallows cards. I would add that the safest machines to use are always the ones at the banks themselves as they're better stocked and maintained and are less likely to be tampered with.

Re: Faulty ATM
Ok, will do.
I think banks are still closed tomorrow so it'll have to be Thursday. I'll take the receipt from the second ATM which, as Mags says, shows the time I withdrew the money so I've got a good idea of when I tried the first one.

Re: Faulty ATM
I think there's another thread on here that I started about the first time it happened to me. Its happened a couple of times since. I've just done as per the advice above. Its never been a problem.
After the first time (that I noticed it) I requested and started receiving SMS messages every time my account balance is altered. I now know exactly what is going on.

Re: Faulty ATM
lomuamart I think this is the thread that BB is talking about.
It happened to me with Kasikorn in HH when using their ATM. They were very helpful, it was NatWest, in the UK, that were the pain in the ass. I suspect that you will get your money back.
Good luck.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Re: Faulty ATM
Hi Lomu,
This happened to me once before.
I bank with Krung si or Ayuthaya Bank (the yellow one).
I attempted to withdraw cash from an ATM (belonging to a different bank) just before entering the bypass at Pranburi and it swallowed my card without dispensing any money.
Each ATM has an ID number affixed to its side.
I phoned the Ayathaya Bank call centre, gave them my details, told them what ATM I had used and they confirmed that the money had not been debited from my account.
So I would suggest you call your bank's call centre first.

Re: Faulty ATM
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I've been back to the offending ATM and got the machine number and also a telephone number off it. It's a Krungsi ATM and I'm with KBank.
I'll try the telephone number later in the hope there's someone there today and go to my branch tomorrow.

Re: Faulty ATM
Spoke to the help desk at Krungsi yesterday and they told me I had to also give details to my bank. Was there as it opened this morning and after giving details to a customer services lady and then a brief chat to HO in BKK, I was told that once they get confirmation that no money was dispensed, I'll get a refund in 7-10 days.
So, all looks good.

Re: Faulty ATM
Last week I was on soi 88 at the 2nd mini mart, got out my money for a few days.
Then the next day I was a bit short, so off to another ATM at the night market. Screen says limit reached. What's going on. Well a call to Australia and they told me I just exceeded my daily limit. I said how, they say you just took 30,000 TWD out of your account. I stopped the card and reported it. But in the one transaction that I done since back in Thailand and my card was skimmed. BEWARE ALL

Re: Faulty ATM
Skimming is more common than you might think in Thailand, especially in tourist areas.
I know one person whose card was skimmed in Bangkok three years ago, his account was cleared out and it took him over a year before the major Thai bank reimbursed him.
Since then, I have only used ATM machines inside banks, I wont even use the ATM outside the Bangkok Bank next to Market Village, where all the motorcycle taxi lads hang out in front of the machines.
Overcautious? Maybe, but given how easy it is to doctor a free standing ATM machine, how nobody would notice whilst the machine was actually being tampered with, and even if they did they probably wouldnt bother reporting their suspicions, I will continue with my cautious ways and hope to avoid the undoubted protracted struggle with a Thai bank to retrieve my funds should the worst happen.

Re: Faulty ATM
Right. You can never be too cautious with the Thai ATMs. Or for any other country's ATMs. Criminal gangs, often from the Balkan countries and South America are dispersed on worldwide ATM fraud sprees. It must be a profitable "business" since the problem is increasing.REEM wrote:Skimming is more common than you might think in Thailand, especially in tourist areas.

Always use the ATMs inside the banks.

Re: Faulty ATM
I can not agree with Lung Per more. Use ATMs that are difficult for the fraudsters to tamper with, because they are under constant monitoring or use one that you know very well and can see if changes have been made to the keyboard and card input/reader. This fraud will become more common, especially in areas where people take less care, i.e where "happy" tourists are unaware and don't report the issue for many hours. Last suggestion.....cover the keyboard with your hand, wallet or whatever you have to hand, to the point where you can hardly see the keyboard. Anyone using a camera to check your key input should be foiled even if they can record the card detail. Be safe and double check if a camera can record your keyboard entry. check, check, check.....and then check again.
