New Restaurant on Soi 88

Post by hhfarang »

My wife and I both love Issan style Thai food and are always looking for a good restaurant for that here. I had recommended Seb Neur Kalison beside the train station but it went out of business, then Tiks on 112, but when Tik had an extended illness the quality suffered, then the one in the middle of Nong Khae village that turned into a boxing gym and is now a dirt lot, so my wife found her (our) new favorite earlier this month.

It has been open about a month and is on Soi 88 with an unpronouncable and unspellable in English (by me) name, but it's easy to spot. It's the second restaurant on the north side of Soi 88 before the railroad crossing comming from Phetkasem road, in other words, pass the gym and car wash, then the walled villas, and there it is just before Chansawang (which is on the corner of Soi 88 and the railway road).

It has excellent Issan food as well as more common Thai dishes and even a couple of menu pages of Western food like pasta, steak, salmon, pork chop, and sandwiches. I have only tried several of the Issan and Thai dishes and they were all good and ranged from 80 baht to 150 baht. It is open air and has been breezy when I've been there and they also have some big powerful fans. The place has a modern feel, wooden chairs (Big Boy :D ) and the best service I've had anywhere in Hua Hin. They literally showed up at our table every time I was thinking maybe I needed something and other times when I didn't even think of it they just showed up to check or put ice in our glasses (or top them up). That service even extends to the ample parking lot (front and rear). They have a parking attendant who is there to open your door, places a sun cover over your windshield, and directs you back safely into traffic when you leave!

On top of all that it is one of the cleanest Thai restaurants I've seen. The place literally sparkled with cleanliness from the glass enclosed kitchen, to the dining area, and yes, even the toilet facilities.

If you are a fan of Som Tam Polami theirs is the best I've had. We'll probably see you there!

^ Yes, I agree. I didn't start a new thread for new the place on soi 88 that I mentioned (reviewed  ) above because I can't pronounce or spell the name of it. If Mods would like to move it to a new thread with the title Issan/Thai/Western restaurant on Soi 88 or some similar heading that would be ok and appreciated by me or better yet, if someone can spell the name for the heading...

And DM, no the parking attendant does not have a whistle... yet!

Ate there tonight and forgot t check the name. I thought it was very good and hhfarang description was right on. It is now on my list of regulars. Only problem is the menu is written in Thai with small orange print English translation. I had trouble reading it even with my reading glasses that I rarely need.

The restaurant on 88, I asked if they have an English name and they do, but I forgot to pick up the piece of paper where the very helpful head lady wrote it.
I hope they got this hint, I could not read the very small English writing, my Thai ladyfriend took a small flashlight from her purse to help read it.
But, its a good place

Went here last night for dinner. About 15 customers. I counted 23 staff memebers incuding the ones in the kitchen. You can see inside the kitchen and there were 5 people in there. A lot of staff which made the service good. Kind of to good to be honest. Always seemed like someone was at our table the whole time and I don't like that. Anyway the food was good, the wife really liked it a lot. We had 5 dishes some rice and a few waters 375 baht.

Went there the day after it opened. I think they had been a little taken aback by the sudden level of custom they were getting. They have some experienced staff running around training the new kids - so I think staffing numbers will drop, if they haven't already - it is about a month already (I haven't been back as I am in the UK at the moment).

Food was excellent and reasonably priced. It is moderately up-market Isaan, with some classic Thai (Tom Yam Gung seems to be a signature dish). The glass wall kitchen is definitely a plus. There is a large screen capability there - I watched a Premier League game there (forget which one) while we had dinner. We were able to drink there on what was otherwise supposed to be a dry day (MAJOR bonus points there!). The bar area itself, which seemed to be dominated by wine and JW Black Label, could do with a little reworking, and seating added, to make a more distinct bar cum waiting area.

Other than that, probably the best new restaurant in HH and certainly the best in that area for some time - IMO, of course!
Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....

My wife and I tried it this evening. Quite a pleasant experience. No little man with or without a whistle to help me park the car though :D

Service was good, not overbearing as some have suggested, so maybe they've learnt; and as has been mentioned, the seating is solid. It was well laid out (can see the point about the bar area though) and very clean.

We ordered 4 Thai dishes - couldn't fault the food. Good taste and served fairly quickly. Price was good as well - 380 Baht :D

Having said the above, it is not good for me personally, so I probably won't be going again, which is a shame. Since my stomach operation 2 years ago, I rarely touch alcohol, and Coke/Pepsi gives me severe stomach cramps. I can drink other soft drinks though. They were adamant that the only soft drink they sell is Coke. I had to settle for water tonight. As I said, 'a shame,' because everything else was perfect.

That is sad, coca cola is wonderful. If your toilet is all scaled off, pour a can in and the following day it will be cleared. If your engine is covered in goop, pour it on, wait an hour, then hose off. Great for removing ink stains from clothes and furniture--- but you mean people drink this toilet cleaner???
