Marriage requirement when renewal of Non-Imm O visa.

Post by huahin4ever »

Something new happened this year when I went for renewal of my 1 year Non-Immigrant O visa. I have been doing this for 4 years now, but this year my marriage registration wasn't good enough! According to the Officer I had to get an updated document from the Amphur stating that we were still married. Even though my wife was with me to the Immigration Office they needed this document.

Went to the new Amphur and got this document in 10 minutes. 3 copies, 60 baht :D. Back again to Immigration and all were fine.

So if this is the case I need an updated marriage registration every year when renewing the visa.

On the other hand I found out that they have a proper register where they can see where and when people got married. I married in Bangkok, but they could print out updated document in Hua Hin.

Strangely I have always used the original received when I got married all the previous years, but this year not good enough. I haven't been able to find any reference to this new requirement on any government/immigration pages on Internet either. Maybe it was just that one officer who needed to make a statement? My experience with the Immigration is that they will always try to find something that is "wrong" :(

I also havn't seen anything official about it but have read that most Imm offices are asking for the Amphur paperwork now. This isn't a HH "thing".

My wife and I have discussed this, i.e. are there advantages to obtaining residence Visa if married in Thailand. We "married" in Thailand, that is had the whole works of ceremony but did not register, We are legally registered as married in my country in order for her to get permanent residency.

What are the advantages if we register the marriage in Thailand for my visa?

Has anyone tried to present an authorized translation of a marriage certificate from another country?
Married people move together for work or other all the time without registering the marriage in multiple countries

Are there clauses to visa connected with registered marriage which means that we would be better adviced to register the marriage in Thailand as soon as possible?

Maybe it can be linked with the new head of nation wide immigration last year, who started a purge on people using forged marriage certs to piggyback, avoiding double monetary requirements. (BK Post article last year).

Now most farangs have to have their marriage certificates verified by home Embassy before renewing permission to stay. This often involves a rushed trip to BK to obtain a letter.

Last December faced the same problem when renewing our permission to stay with a marriage certificate which had been "good" for 6 years of renewals.

HH Immigration pulled out a huge file and said "you must have letter from Embassy", why said I when this has been good for 6 years and was issued by a British Embassy in the first place.

Head of HH immigration was called and I was given the OK, pointing out a little embossed stamp about the size if a 1 Baht coin saying "British Embassy". I had no idea it was there.
Wait to see what happens this December.

So this was your certificate from the registrar in the UK and obviously in English? I thought the way to go was toregister the marriafe in Thailand as well.
Mine in Norwegan will be no good I expect, the best I can do is to provide a certified translation

When I submitted my forms to Hull in November last year they needed to see a copy of the REVERSE side of my wedding cert..the official box with number & signature..So maybe there's some truth in the O/P's idea that a nationwide 'belt-tightening' is in place as regards ex-pat's wedding certificates.
