Hi help and advice for a chap that lives just two miles away from me.
He served 18,years in Bang Kwang the ( Bankok Hilton) for drug smuggling he has been released now for over a year. He wants to write a book and tell his story he hasn't got very far with this to date as ghost writers want thousands of pounds for two or three chapters just to get the ball rolling and to present this to a publisher.
Now the man in question has done his time and has been pardoned so I don't feel it's right to judge him , but if I could help him in a positive way on a path of rebuilding his life then that's a good thing.
So can anyone help or give some advice maybe published authors or ghost writers or even publishers if preferred contact me via PM.

I would suggest that he forget ghost writers etc.....
Start writing the book himself...... As only the author will be able to impart certain emotions etc.....
Once he has completed a few chapters...... Get it direct to publishers......If it is any good..... They will go out there way to provide the assistance that he needs.......
If he needs any encouragement...... There are a couple of well known Scottish bawbags that have done the crime...... Done the time..... wrote the book and made the movie.....

He should look at joining his local writing club. A friend of mine spoke about writing a book on his expat adventures, but it was not until he got the support and encouragement from fellow writers at his local writers club that the whole thing took off and he did eventually publish with Amazon on Kindle

One option is getting in touch with (or trying to - not that simple) the literary agents that helped the like of Warren Fellows (The Damage Done) and the others (Welcome to Hell, Forget You Had a Daughter...) and letting them know the situation. If they didn't go through literary agents ,which is highly unlikely, speak to the publishing house that they went to. Ghost Writers won't be interested unless they are given a fair whack of cash, as it's not a book that's going to be in massive demand. The 'Got Locked Up Abroad' scenario has been done to death now.kendo wrote:Hi help and advice for a chap that lives just two miles away from me.

Al I can say is that, if he is not 'literate' enough to write it himself... he's going to find it very difficult, unless there's something about his prison story which makes it stand out from the rest.
You could even get in touch with the film crew that does the 'Locked up/Banged up abroad' series to see if they are interested in a new episode.
I wish your friend the best of luck as he's obviously gone through a very tough time to pay his dues.

A quick google shows that Mainstream Publishing Co. brought us the best selling 'The Damage Done'. I'm sure it's easy enough to find details about the other jail stories origins.
Difficult with no written story to offer, but no harm in trying to get in contact. If he can get across how 'interesting' his story is they may just hire ghost writers for him and cut it off the % (generally 7% of sales is for yourself minus whatever advance payment they may have given you, of which, the literary agent would have taken his 15% off too). When I say try and get in touch, I mean send constant mails to them (or anywhere else possible) frequently and hope that someone bites.
I must have tried 40-50 literary agents before one even bothered replying.
