Passport question

We are flying to Thailand from Sydney in August. Staying for 1 month. Returning to OZ in September.
I have noticed that my son's passport expires in January 2015.
I'm getting conflicting info on wether he can travel on the passport or not.
Thai airlines says they don't require 6 month validity any more and he is good to fly.
The Thai consulate in Sydney is saying he can't fly and requies a new passport.
At what point does the passport get checked, At check in or going through custom's?

Any one know? or gone through this before

If it's the same as the UK you won't get a new passport before August!

Most, if not all countries require that your passport is still valid for a period of six months or more at the time you enter the country.

I did a visa (90 out in) at Ranong once, and completely forgot about this, the fact that my passport was soon to expire. Fortunately, the immigration officer there was really nice about it and just made me promise that I would get my visa and etc transferred to my new passport as soon as it arrived.

A friend of mine visited Laos with his Thai wife last year and because she had less than six months on her passport, Laos immigration demand $200 before she was allowed to enter.


Like BigBoy has said, rather don't take the chance if you can help it.

Hi Kev, if you can get one in two days, I'd get one, as BB says, in the UK they credit you the unused time onto the new passport, so if it's the same in Aus, you don't lose anything.
