England National Team

Post by PeteC »

Do you think Rooney should replace Gerrard as captain?

My thinking is perhaps yes on the performance side, but not on the leadership side. All this needs more thought as it could go down very badly with fans IMO. Pete

EDIT: I've added a poll above.

I would like a defender, preferably central position, to be captain. Someone like Terry Butcher springs to mind, 'do or die' type player but not sure we really have any of those anymore...

Perhaps if there's an exceptionally inspirational player available he might make a difference, but to be perfectly honest I'm not sure it matters much. The captain plays a crucial role in rugby and cricket, but in football he's little more than a figurehead.

A little trivia. Can you name all of the players in the photo? I can't even name one, but assume the hoisted is the captain. Pete

:thumb: Well done! I had a feeling the Captain was Bobby Charlton. Can we put a year to it?

I got the photo from a BBC Sports Facebook page that appears to be debating if Rooney should be Captain.

Rooney as captain...!!!

The man (with wife and kid on the way) couldn't keep his pecker away from prostitutes and you think he's possible replacement for Gerrard? Horrible choice if it happens. The guy tried to do a runner from Man U also... until they made him the highest paid player in the Premier League at the time (commercial side of football rules all in England - Rooney sells a lot of shirts)!

Absolute twat is Rooney... right up there with Terry.

I'd see who puts in the most effort and commands respect during training to make that decision - not gonna be Rooney that's for sure.

By the by... that's Moore holding the cup. Was he captain? Don't know.... wasn't born, didn't see it, couldn't care less. We are no longer great... we are shite.

Old 'Arry would have given us a better chance at some sort of success, but the FA is the FA... 'Feck All' worried about the national sport anymore. Business as usual.

... aaaaand breathe. :D

So, Bobby Charlton was a survivor of the 1958 Munich crash. Any others in that photo?
