"Immigration clarifies new regulations for foreigners in Chiang Mai"

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

He noted that online work for overseas companies that pay overseas is not prohibited but that the person will need to get a visa to stay longer, currently there is no new visa for these kinds of people.
Reminds me of when I was in hospital in Koh Pha Ngan a long time ago.

"We're going to give you some medicine now but you need to eat first"
(relieved) "Fine. I'm very hungry"
"Oh.. We don't have food here."

He added that for offshore workers who work outside the country for several months and then return regularly, but also leave and stay out for a period of time, will have no issue leaving and re-entering the country.
That's good news anyway as I'm in the same boat of working away and frequently returning to Thailand. Whilst I don't mind getting a visa in principle, the reality is that it actually works out quite expensive for me in that the nearest Thai consulate is in Belgium and they'll only deal with Belgium or Luxembourg residents, which I'm technically not, so I'd have to go to London to get one as there's no way I would trust my passport in the post.

^ Good news for a lot of folks... half of my foreign friends here work offshore and come and go several times per year.
