Hi Angkor, reason i asked about your location - in Siem Reap in February and met a French guy who golfed here every July and ran a really good restaurant!

Enjoy your golf :)

This would certainly speed up play in casual golf. During 50 years of casually playing golf I always tried to play strictly by the published rules (even carried a little blue rule book in my bag to solve rules arguments), but the one rule I have broken repeatedly is the one addressed by number 2 below, it is simply not always sensible to go back to where you hit from when a ball is lost. I've lost them in the fairway and just off the edge where no one felt the need for me to hit a provisional ball. When I've broken that rule I've penalized myself 2 strokes though because of "stroke" and "distance" rule penalty. I also have a couple of damaged clubs in my bag that would be ok if rule number 4 was applied. I have a club with big dents in the edge from hitting off gravel and had to replace a shaft in one because of a tree root.

"Golf Channel debuted a series Friday on “Morning Drive” designed to help make golf more fun. Charlie Rymer and Matt Ginella are the leading voices of the new Relaxed Rules series that boils golf down to just seven common sense rules.

In preparation, Golf Channel commissioned a research study that showed 85 percent of golfers, both avid and lapsed, are in favor of relaxed rules for recreational play.

“When there’s nothing on the line but fun, recreational golf should be an enjoyable experience,” Rymer said. “Trying to remember and decipher the official rules can get in the way of a good time.”

Said Ginella: “We’re not suggesting that golfers ignore the official rules. They should continue to be used for any type of competitive play. But when it’s a match among friends, relaxed rules can make the game easier, faster and more fun. These simply are common sense practices for avid amateurs, and it’s how the majority of the game is being played anyway.”

Here are the seven rules:

1. MAXIMUM SCORE: Double par (i.e. 6 on par 3s, 8 on par 4s….)

2. PENALTIES: All are one stroke, including out of bounds, water and lateral hazards, lost ball and unplayable lie. Drop a ball near where the original was lost and play on.

3. SEARCH TIME: Two minutes to look for your ball. If lost, proceed under Rule 2.

4. UNFORTUNATE LIES: With your playing partners’ consent, balls may be dropped out of divots or footprints, away from tree roots and any other dangerous lies.

5. CONCEDED PUTTS: Putts may be conceded with your playing partners’ consent.

6. EQUIPMENT: No restrictions, including number of clubs.

7. COMMON SENSE: When in doubt, use common sense and fairness.

The relaxed rules are being supported by Golf Channel on air, online and through social media, featuring the #GolfIsFun hashtag and GolfChannel.com’s “Golf is Fun” page.

I'm just throwing this out for confirmation, denials, comments etc.

I heard today perhaps for the 10th time that golf courses in all of Thailand are not permitted to have water bores (wells) of any type, by law.

The subject came up as the courses around me are suffering with all course ponds and water hazards down to about the bottom few feet of water. They use these ponds and hazards to water the course apparently.

The rains to a small degree have arrived here in the east, enough to keep the courses green, but there is no pond supply at all to get these courses through the coming dry season. Pete

EDIT: Forgot the ending.. old age! Hua Hin is always dry with little rain, what do the courses do there, pipe water in from the Pranburi river which I think is not too far away?

I can only say that after the very dry years of 2010 & 2011 in 2012 Lakeview Golf Resort contracted for 20 bore holes and they were almost all found to be of an insufficient flow rate to be of interest, So on this information I would presume there is no law on this providing it is for the purpose of topping up existing lakes on the course.

I have also heard that golf courses can not use groundwater for irrigation. I am also sure that laws can be broken if you pay money to the right person.
Golf courses around Hua Hin are doing ok for water despite the dry weather. There has been a lot more rain inland from Hua Hin, where most of the golf courses are. The coastal strip has been drier.

Well I played Black Mountain and Banyan over the weekend... Trip report.... BM was in its usual well groomed state... Greens were firm and not overly fast, true roll... Banyan course was fine, greens were absolutely horrible... No joking, with price they charge I expected excellent greens... We all were very disappointed in the round... I won't be back there until someone reports that the greens have been sorted out.... Played Palm Hills a few times and their greens are in better shape, fast and good roll...

I live in HH and am considering taking up golf but not willing to pay 3000b+ per round since I hope to play at least once a week. I've decided I can get a better set of "starter" clubs in the States so don't plan on starting until after my next visit there in June.

7 months with no golf gossip

Some friends are coming over next year, and are hoping to attend a tournament at Black Mountain (this golfing ignoramus has no idea what specific event  ). Is there an events coordinator that I can put them in touch with please? An e-mail address or web page would be great.

I don't recall seeing any posters up at BM for a pro tournament. When do your friends think the tournament is on?

BB,
What are your friends looking for?
If it's just to visit the event, then I'd just say turn up, pay the entry fee and stroll around.
Or are they looking for hotels, transportation etc etc?
A golf event like this won't be quite like going to Wembley to see an England game. Ie, I doubt it will be sold out, spectator wise.

They are looking to buy tickets in advance. They don't want to leave it to chance.
