While visiting Chang Rai I might take my Thai wife and her old man on a day trip to Laos.
I suspect I can easily cross the border with my European passport and return without much adoo. I am aware of the Thai "report back to Immigrations" requirement.
My question is, can a Thai citizen cross the border with a Thai ID card only? Or is some sort of Lao visa hoolabaloo required?

Not sure now but a few years back I took half the wife's Thai family over from Nong Khai for the day. ID cards and a form were sufficient. Even the ones too young to have an ID card went over after a photo was taken.

We are going to Ban Dung on our next trip over as the mother in law has moved up there with the wife's brother I want to see the mighty Mekong river and we are thinking of a day trip over to Vientiane the wife says she can cross the border with her ID card no problem.
So without hijacking this thread to much what would be the visa requirement for me and my daughter crossing into Laos and then back to Thailand.
Is Bangkok a place or a nasty injury.......Eric Morcombe.
I'm not 100% sure of the exact details, but my friend and his Thai wife went across about a year ago and he ended up being stung for either $100 or $200 in order for his wife to enter. Can try and find out why if it will help.
On a slightly different note......I wanted to take my kids over to Burma a couple of months back, knowing that Thais can get a temporary border pass. Sadly, immigration on Thai side would not allow them to go with me unless they hold valid passports. Their passports had just expired, but when I pointed this out to the immigration officer, and politely mentioned a temporary pass, he said "cannot do". I then informed him that the kids have been across with my wife and I in the past and no problem. To this he replied that it is okay but only if their Thai mother is with them. If with me alone, they must have passport.
Maybe Farang fathers are more likely to sell their kids than what Thai mothers are.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact
It's akin to exporting body parts which we know Thais would never do
