2014 Cycle ride across Thailand in December?

Post by V4281051 »

The last couple of years there has been a cycle ride across Thailand from Dan Singkorn to Ao Manao in Prachua...Is this still running in 2014..? I seem to remember it was organised by someone in Hua Hin?

I've never heard about this but I'd be interested in giving it a go if you find out anything, I'll be out for most of December.

Yes indeed :thumb: This years Border to border ride is (I think) scheduled to take place on the 18th Dec.
As with all previous rides we all finish at an open air Thai-style food & drink area next to the beach at Ao Manao, with lots of seating & cheap prices on both food & beers

We all leave the Dan Singkon border at 11.00am, then enjoy a mostly downhill cycle ride past temples, hills, temples, shrimp farms, temples, rubber plantations, & you may even spot an occassional temple..
..
This ride is not a race..although we all set off together, soon little groups form & they all get to the end when they do...simples

Now there is a choice on this day..
(Assuming you have taken your bike down there by pick-up)..
Either park your truck at Ao Manao..then cycle the 21kms (mostly uphill) to the start for 11.ooam.
(Then after lunch your truck is there under the trees ready to load-up & go).
Drive straight to the border, leave your truck there, then cycle back up for your vehicle..after food & beer to (in your mind) 'burn off' the lunchtime session.
Take a non-cyclist with you.. to follow the group down to Ao Manao with the car/truck, then after lunch you can load up your 2-wheeler & leave from there.
Finally, some cyclists stay overnight down there..booking a hotel & enjoying an evening around Pratchaup before returning the next day..possibly going to the aquairium just 15km or so south of town. (The Air force base's own hotel is good value & has pool & full facillities)
All types of cycles (& cyclists) are welcome, & apart from one or two rises in the road this route is not demanding.
Indeed more info is available on the HH/Cha Am Hash House Harrier's web pages & on their facebook page...

Bike Burma to Beach

Post by BUSHWHACKER »

Bike completely across Thailand from west to east on Thursday the 18th of December. The epic Odyssey of Endurance will roll from the Burma border at Singkhon heading downhill and toward the open sea at 11:am sharp. There are no meal stops and no water stops so you are advised to start with a good breaky and have a bottle of water with you. The journey will continue non-stop until you reach the end at beautiful Ao Manao where we will enjoy some ice cold bevvies and maybe put on the feedbag and then relax on the beach. If you are up to it and fit enough to join in on the challenge, there is no fee at all. Just be at the checkpoint at Singkhon well ahead of the 11:am roll off. This should provide you plenty of time to visit the interesting Burmese market on the Thai side of the border. If you have any questions please respond to the topic or call Don 0850887181. BTW, this ride is just 21km, mostly downhill and if you are old, fat and knackered like many of us, it might take you an hour. This is 8th annual Odyssey of Endurance Burma to the Beach bike ride. If you come and if you provide a snail mail address you will be awarded a grand certificate for your most noteworthy accomplishment of that day.

This sounds like fun! If I can rent a bike that somewhat fits me, I'll be there!
I wouldn't have to manage my anger if people could learn to mange their stupidity!

I've actually been thinking about it. However, my bike used to have a sword instead of a seat, and really hurt me. Even though I've replaced the seat, I haven't built up the courage to get back on.

If anybody needs a support vehicle, I could be persuaded.

Big Boy, This run is only 21 km and is mostly downhill as it begins in mountains of Burma / Thai border and ends up at sea level right at the beach and the cold beer. If you take your bike to the border in a pickup truck and ride to the beach on your bike, I'll load the pickup with drivers to retrieve their bikes at the border after a bit of grub and maybe a cold Leo.

If I had a few more days to try it, I'd give it a go - maybe next year. 8Kms was bringing tears to my eyes, and I wouldn't want to be a burden.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Big Boy, I don't have much time but I will try to find a "side car" for a bike and you can ride with me then! LOL
Come and join for a beer or three anyway!
