The Digital Surgery (computer questions/problems here)
Re: The Digital Surgery
Yes BB but resolved by their call centre. Didn't realise at the time it was a pirate download that caused the damage

Looking for assistance,if possible.
Have a sony ultrabook, suddenly i can not get it to function without the charger being plugged in.When plugged in,it shows 56%,plugged in and charging, when in fact it does not alter from this level. It is not possible to open the computor without the charger being installed.
I wondered if any of the Hua Hin computor wizz personel could either assist or point me in the right direction.
Sony in Bkk want to keep the unit for a minimum of 5 days for checks, which is not really ideal, wondered if anyone has experienced the same problem?
Thank you for any assistance.

Re: Looking for assistance,if possible.
Same problem, different brand of ultrabook. Does your sony also have a battery that is not replaceable except by their service center and opening the case voids the warranty? Anyway, the manufacturer replaced the ultrabook. I would have jumped for joy if it had taken only 5 days.Thistle wrote: anyone has experienced the same problem?
Re: The Digital Surgery
Thanks Homer, yes the battery is a sealed unit.I am going to let one of the local computor shops which i have used before take a look, and then possibly consider returning to Sony if all else fails.

Microsoft updates for Win 8.1
Just executed a couple of updates and rebooted. Firefox completely screwed up. Finally sorted it out to my liking but an annoying 'start up' tab appears. My 'start up' page has always been Gmail but now is webssearches. Tried many ways of getting rid (searching for the thing etc) but to no avail. Irritating but not damaging.
Any suggestions please?

If you go into TOOLS then OPTIONS this enables you to decide the Start Up page you want - does this not work?richard wrote:Microsoft updates for Win 8.1

Re: The Digital Surgery
Is it websearches like in this article http://www.fixyourbrowser.com/removal-i ... val-guide/? If so you could do as suggested. This hijack is highly unlikely to have been installed by Microsoft updates - but not impossible I suppose.
Re: The Digital Surgery
Thank you
Done using Adw
Probably right about it not being Microsoft updates. I'd done a software update the day before and excluded all the add on shit that came with it but obviously missed one

Re: The Digital Surgery
Anyone know a repair shop for fixing Macbooks?
I got one which needs to be opened and cleaned but just finding the proper pentalobe(?) 5-star screwdriver has proven to be difficult. Two shops proudly claimed that they can do it but neither could not even open the case :/
I'd prefer not to use the Apple Care at Market Village as they need to send the laptop to Bangkok and the costs are probably quite a bit more than from someone doing it locally here.

^^
This must be a pretty new MacBook since the pentalobe screws are only included on the latest Retina MBPs and some MacBook Air models. iPhones have had pentalobe screws for some years but the sizes are different (P2 vs. P5).
If you're feeling brave, navigate to ifixit.com, buy a pentalobe screwdriver from them for less than $10 and then use one of their superb step-by-step guides to open up your laptop and (carefully) give it a clean. I've bought gear from them and used their guides for many years with my Mac line-up and have always been very impressed with what they offer. The fact that you're willing to hand it to someone at MV suggests you don't care about any Apple warranty so you have nothing to lose.

I think the warranty is bit difficult, the laptop was bought in Finland over a year ago and it has now tasted half glass of red wine through the air exhaust. It works but I bet there is huge risk that it doesn't work for long if I use it like this.
I'm not sure but I kind of expect Apple care not to cover accidental wine spills :/
I've opened my laptops and macs before and I checked the ifixit page for this model (last year, retina macbook). It looks like it's again harder to get into it so I would have been happy to give it to someone who actually knows their thing and do this on daily basis. It looks like I have to head to Bangkok to get it done though.

Google Chrome + Avast - sneaky or what?
A little something that has intrigued and pi55ed me off.
OK - had to buy a new laptop, I bludgeoned the old one with 12 - 15 hrs of work a day for the last 4 years.............and was getting startup problems with the HD making lots of mechanical noise.
So - nice new machine, i7 processor, 1TB HD and necessary bells and whistles for the consulting work + running the Lodge website, emails etc etc that is my daily grind.
Not 100% happy with Windows 8.1 64 bit, but I'll persevere since Mr. Gates will continue onwards and upwards................
Now the fun starts.
I have successfully, loaded all of my software, data etc etc and all is well - except for my browser and antivirus.
I have been using Firefox for years and was trying out the new 'Nightly' and all was well except when I downloaded Avast - which is of course a Google affiliated product.
As soon as I open the Firefox browser I get a virus warning from Avast every 30 seconds or so
As soon as I change to Google Chrome - all is well
Methinks a plot is afoot here.
Comments please in a brown envelope.
