That's right about the cameras - got that bit wrong in my last post. However, these machines are about. They attach to where you put your card in. Very small, but are detectable if you look carefully. I've never seen one, but I've certainly read and heard about them. Most major banks were warning their customers not to use an ATM that seemed in any way "suspicious", not long ago.
Maybe the crooks have moved onto other things as too many folk are aware of the copying devices?
On a "lighter" note, I once had the misfortune to listen to a fairly drunk scallywag back home who described how he raided ATMs. Think it was Nat West at the time. It was the machine where you put your card in, PINed and then a sliding screen came up for you take your money. He'd go there with his card on a Friday night, armed with superglue and an empty biro. He'd take his fiver, or whatever, and as the screen came down, insert the glued biro between the screen and the bottom.
Sunday night, he'd come back with a stanley knife and slice the biro apart. The screen would open and "ker chunk, ker chunk", money would spew forth. Everyone who'd used the machine before just thought it was broken.
Dunno how true that was, but he was adamant that he did it. I made a hasty exit from the pub.
There's a TV programme here in the UK called 'The Real Hustle' - this programme shows in finite detail how to pull off a variety scams including card fraud. There's no wonder there's a problem.

Guess, one of my Irish colleagues lost 5000 euros out of his account two weeks ago, on a weekend back home. He has been refunded by the bank, and told that it was done by a camera and recording device placed on the ATM.
One thing I do all the time here is to cup my left hand over the key pad and then enter my pin with by right hand under the left. I would think that may foil any small camera hidden above? Makes me feel good at least. There's another thing here, especially on weekends, vendors come and paste tiny brochure kits all over ATM machines and surrounding areas. The bank never tears them off until the next Monday. I remove them all the time thinking something may be concealed in or under. Pete

Seen a couple of times in Scandinavia - both times it was organized by easter-european gangs - from Lituania and Romania.

Also a typical one - also used by eastern european gangs here.
Best advise to get around this - only use machines inside banks whenever possible - or a machine you know from earlier transactions.
I have seen some the dogdy machines in danish television, and from that I wouldn't have put my card in them anyway
Just had an email from my folks who were saying that there was lot on the telly in the UK over the weekend about this.
Apparantly, Barclays are the first bank to have installed something to all their ATMs to stop the copying devices being put on them - maybe cameras as well, I'm not sure. They weren't specific as to exactly what has changed with their ATMs, but my Mum said she'd now be sure to use only Barclay's ATMs, not any others.
Some 85 million pounds has been lost over the past year due to these scams and as always it seems, Barclays are the first to respond to the situation - in the UK at least.
Maybe it's not too surprising that we have all been experiencing problems over here, bearing in mind the dreadful reputation this country has for cc and dc card fraud.
Lomu, I’m back in Luxembourg and most of the ATMs here have cameras built into them, it stares straight at you while you use the thing. Like you, I try to use the ones in bank lobbies, preferably in a city centre surrounded by CCTV cameras. In fact there is one opposite the central police station which must be about as good as it gets.

Best Atm scam I ever heard of was of some guy rolling up in the middle of the night with his JCB and taking the whole lot including half the wall

Colombo: Thai authorities have seized more than 5000 fake credit cards and arrested three Sri Lankan men, police said today.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Boonlert Ongklang said they seized 1750 credit cards in the suspects' rental car, and later found thousands more at their hotel, leading to a record confiscation of 5350 cards, a news agency reported.
About 2300 of the fake cards had been encoded with genuine credit card data from England, one official said, adding that if all 5350 cards were used, the men could have withdrawn up to 400 million baht ($11 million).

I have just come back from Hua Hin. When I put my Barclays Connect Card in the ATM there was no problem, but when I tried a second time I could not get any cash. I contacted the call centre which was an 0800 number I they told me that I we had not notified our bank that we were going to Thailand. They unblocked our card and we did not have any problems after that.
