Water filter

I'm not on mains water and have a very large underground tank that gets filled by a truck every couple of weeks. The water then goes through what I think is a filter. It's a stainless steel rocket shaped thing about 4 feet high and 8 inches across, with various taps and valves and a pressure gauge. If this is a filter I guess it needs servicing? I have been in the house 5 years and haven't done it yet!

Anyone else got a similar set up?

Anyone know of a man that can service and replace any bits that should be done and how often should I be doing this?

A friend of mine used to have something that I think was similar to what you describe. More modern filters have replaceable cartridges and automatic back wash to flush them out, his didn't. You had to back wash it by using those valves in the correct sequence and it was filled up with loose filter medium from sacks. Certainly it will need servicing after five years and I'm sure someone in the area can do it, there must still be many of them around but I don't know who.

I had the same thing and never had to have it serviced (in 7 years) but I backwashed it thoroughly every month. Have you done that? The instructions were on mine in the form of valves and numbers and the order you needed to turn them to reverse the flow and backwash the filters. If you've done that you regularly and still have problems you probably need repairs. If not, try it and see if the water returns to good pressure and clear. I let it flow freely backwards for about 10 minutes each month.

If you haven't done that you may need to replace the filter elements inside. I think this needs to be done professionally on that type of filter and anyone (HomePro) who sells it should be able to do it.

If it is stainless steel, you are fortunate that it has not sprung a leak before now. Most of them are of very low quality stainless.

Yes, it sould be backwashed regularly, with the flush water let go to waste. Inside it should have a combination of diatomaceous earth and activated carbon. The material probably needs replacing after that amount of time.

There is a "Filter Mart" shop just north of the traffic lights at the Palace, on the ocean side of Petchkasem Rd. They have every type of filter, and the filter material. They also have service people.

Thanks guys, I don't have any problems ( at the moment) but I'm the sort of person who likes to keep on top of servicing. The sun has got to any instructions that may have been on it. I'll go and hunt down the place on Petchkasem rd, thanks Nereus.

Was on the way to Petchkasem rd when I spied a place at the bottom of the Pala u rd. I showed a pic of the 'rocket' and he said yes no problem they can service.

As others have mentioned, the filter will certainly need "Back-flushing" - also as Nereus stated, it will very likely have an "Activated Carbon Filter" which will have to be changed.

I had a very similar filter whilst in China, and also whilst working in Africa. You do need to take care with these.
