Patches of oil slicks have been located about one kilometer from the shoreline of Hua Hin and officials expect that they will be swept on the beaches soon, said the first region’s naval fleet.

The fleet sent a plane to patrol the sea off Prachuab Khiri Khan on Wednesday at the request of the provincial administration and the airmen reported seeing several patches of oil slicks floating in the sea about one kilometer from the shoreline of Hua Hin.

One black patch of oil slick is about 4 kilometres long and some patches are transparent and Hua Hin beaches are expected to be hit by the oil slicks once again, said officials.

^ are they putting containment booms in place? Perhaps be a bit pro active to keep it from coming ashore?

I doubt it.

They will scrape up the oil and dirty sand and debris that they can easily see and say all is well but that oil is still in the sand beneath the surface and it is still in the water and it will take months (at least) for all of that to breakdown.

I don't expect to go anywhere near the beaches or water in HH for quite some time.

Sorry Big Boy but you put not too bad and oily film to describe a beach. Seems like a total contradiction. No local terminology understanding needed to describe the statement. :?

Compared with the photos I'd seen of the Hua Hin and Khao Takiab beaches, the beach at Khao Tao did not look too bad. However, upon closer inspection it was easily seen that there was a clear oily film at the head of each wave. This oil was not giving the same oily vision that had been evident elsewhere the previous day.

This is further supported by HHTel's report describing 'One black patch of oil slick' and 'some patches are transparent'.

I hope this clarifies what we were seeing at Khao Tao.

aldo5,

I was in the water today up to my knees at the bottom of the standing buddha helping Trash Hero HH crew clean up. There is still plenty of oily sludge in the water and seeping out of the sand. I wouldn't be swimming for a while yet. Not sure what sort of health problems this stuff could cause you and it isn't too easy to remove from your feet either...

Bangkok Post are reporting more oil coming onshore in the next day or two. No swimming until further notice according to the mayor.

Tourists trickle back as oily tide ebbs on Hua Hin beach

...."The navy secretariat reported on Thursday that aerial patrols earlier found a long strip of oil about one nautical mile off Hua Hin to the Suan Son Pradipat beach. On Thursday, the slick was about 500 metres long off Suan Son Pradipat.".....

If I had a holiday planned for HH for this high season or had family or friends coming to visit and they were wanting to go to the beach I would certainly be rethinking that idea. At least the beaches anywhere near HH.

I said "rethinking" but that is too generous. I would be cancelling and looking elsewhere for a beach holiday. That oil and all the health problems that go with it is some nasty stuff. Those good folks out there today need to be in haz mat suits, rubber boots/gloves, etc. But they aren't!

I hate to think about the kids that will be playing out in that crap a week or two from now.

Oil slicks which were swept into Hua Hin beaches in the past few days came from fishing boats at the estuaries of Mae Klong and Tha Chine rivers about 100 kilometres away from the seaside resort town, according to Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

What would fishing boats be doing with crude oil?

Has it been determined that it was crude?

Regardless of what was suggested above, my money is still on the freighter that sunk 8 miles off of Samut Prakan. I know more than a month ago but until we find out why it sunk, what kind of fuel that ship used and what it was carrying in any drums as cargo, it's my chief suspect. Who knows what happened when they were grappling that thing off the bottom and towing it to port, and it seems to be a Thai owned vessel and shipping company which means to me no one wants any further negative publicity.
