Where to get Tramadol

Post by T.I.G.R. »

Last month I ran out of my chronic pain meds, I went to Hua Hin Hospital which we frequent because it's closer and the wife has one of the government cards. I already knew that in Thailand you cannot renew a prescription for scheduled drugs so was prepared for the obligatory doctor visit and only a 30 day prescription (which I found out last time I went to Bangkok Hospital.....one hour wait and 1,200 BHT)

Happily I found out at Hua Hin Hospital that if you are over 70 (which I am) you do not have to wait in line any more!

A 30 day supply of Tramadol plus the Dr. visit was only................................150 BHT !!!!!!!!!!!! (Tip....we went at 5:00 pm and were in and out in 30 minutes)

You don't need to visit the hospital to get Tramadol! :)

Sorry Big Boy, but one more and I'm done. The rules for Tramadol changed about three years ago. It is now a controlled substance in Thailand. I should know, I've been taking it for ten years and I certainly would have continued to get it over the counter if it was available.

It's still available in certain pharmacies. I wouldn't want to list the ones I know of because I wouldn't want to get anybody into any trouble. You can go in and ask "do you have Tramadol" and they'll either tell you that you need to go to the hospital, or say "yes, how many do you want?"

I think it's available at a basic pharmacy if dispensed by a top notch (qualified) pharmacist. I don't know, but I guess that as TIT, there won't be that many top notch pharmacists.

It was taken off the shelves around the same time as Actifed for similar reasons. Illegal drug production

I am sure it can still be obtained because TIT but by law it's no longer available.

I use four pills a day, or 4 X 50 mg. That equates to approx. 120 a month. If one of you thinks you can find a legally run pharmacy that will provide that quantity of a controlled substance, month in and month out, over the counter you are dreaming.

I'm only harping on this for the benefit of those who are contemplating moving here and think they can get anything they want whenever and wherever they want......the reality is there are medicines you may get at home but may not find here. For example, I can get a 90 day supply of Tramadol in California if I'm going out of the country for that long, but not on a regular basis. Here, you get 30 days. Here you don't get Vicodin, Methadone etc. at all.

You would be wise to verify what you can and can't get with the Hospital of your choice , especially if you're talking about medicines vital to your health. Also, know that you can't get controlled medicines from your local clinic, only from a hospital.

This is a very good point. When we moved here, the cheapest of the medications my wife needed was not licenced at all in Thailand. I tried everything, but nobody would supply - I even tried the overseas Viagra sellers who seem to sell everything, but even they were honest and admitted they were not allowed to supply to Thailand.

After months of investigation, the only option was to try Hua Hin's reportedly best hospital, who had just contracted a specialist to travel down from Bangkok every other Saturday morning.

That specialist ignored everything we had brought from the UK, and prescribed something which was going to have a very detrimental effect. Out of desperation, I rushed my wife up to Petcharat, who openly admitted they were not allowed to prescribe the correct medication. However, they knew where the only guy South of Bangkok who could prescribe held a clinic and arranged for a motorcycle taxi to guide us there. My wife was on the mend within 2 days.

The point of this story is that of all the pills we take, this was the one we would never have thought would have been a problem. If I had done my homework and checked, the trouble I had to go through and my wife's health problems could have been avoided.

As for the best hospital in Hua Hin prescribing the wrong drugs, admitting they weren't qualified would not have made the till ring, nor kept the shareholders happy.

Can anyone advise if Solpadol (500mg Paracetamol and 30mg Codeine ) is available? Not the weaker Solpadine version. Herself suffers with Sciatica frequently and Tramadol sends her off the head as does all the Lyricas and OxyContin etc etc. Thanks.

killala..does 'herself' speak Thai?..or do you know anyone that can translate for you..? Because in the past, when I have needed 'special' medicine I've gone to the big 'Gee' Pharmacy on Petkasem Rd..just north of Starbucks.
The old lady in there knows her stuff & with some explanation..may just serve you what you need..?

Codeine is a narcotic. Bringing some with you? Might want to check the Thai laws first.

Be bringing 3 months supply Homer and that's an awful lot of script codeine. Have brought it in before without an issue but we do have covering letter from the GP here at home and copies of prescription, hopefully that should suffice if questioned.
Thanks for the information.
