Yep, must be some short cut - I'd certainly like to know what sort of vessel is going to provide them with over 50 knots, especially in the high season when the wind and waves are also at their highest.....

if the ferry lands in Pran Buri, I am thinking because of the new very long and well illuminated "boardwalk" on the gulf and the clear shot south right along the water to beach front hotels all the way to Dolphin Bay, why come to HH?

it is very romantic down the coast, so i am thinking many two-three day rent a romance from Pattaya will be holed up at a seaside bungalow.

but another thing, this ferry is going WAY out across the open waters of the gulf. Not like going to Samui on the ferry.
any days with 20-30 KPH winds generating wind waves or any distant storm activity and the ferry starts rolling. some green faces showing up on both ends.

i would open a bar, scooter rental, hair salon and laundry right next to the terminal. and sell barf bags, saltine crackers and Dramamine.

I think the comparison is supposed to show the time taken on the ferry vs time taken if you drive yourself. I don't think the 5 hours is supposed to represent the speed of a car ferry!

yep, looking at it again, that makes a lot of sense Pleng

Still want to know where the 50+ knots are going to come from, though...

I'm working off of memory but as I recall the high speed catamaran from Chumphon to Koh Tao is a distance of about 70 Km and takes about 90 minutes. Whatever they have planned for this ferry to Pattaya the distance is a much further and now they are going to load cars on as well. I think whomever is on that this is going to out there a while.

Some wind and some waves and I sure would not want to be on it.

Cheers!

The last operational ferry was a catamaran, it took 3 hours in good weather to make the crossing and cost 3,500baht per person, the ferry was cancelled many times due to bad weather. The ferry also never had enough customers so I can't see any new ferry having more customers. It did not last long before becoming un-economical to run and closed it's doors.

Apparently there was a service even before that one. It was a triangular service: BKK - Pattaya - Hua Hin - BKK. Managed to run for 6 months in 1989 using a 72 seat hydrofoil. Bkk - Pattaya 90 minutes, 350 baht. Pattaya - HH - 45 min, 150 baht. HH - BKK 100 min, 450 baht. No details of frequency, or why it stopped. Ref: pdf here in thai.

Pattaya to HH 45 minutes, it must have been the fastest boat on earth

Well BB's post shows the ferry doing Pranburi to Pattaya in 1.15 hrs for the 60 nm, which is a speed of just over 50 knots. I think a hydrofoil would be faster than a catamaran, wouldn't it? Though I doubt if either could make the advertised crossing times in normal gulf conditions. Any idea how long the most recent ferry used to take?

If this project gets up and running.again.any idea on prices for a return trip.have used the cowboy minivans previously.trip should take 4 hours? Can take up to 6.so many stops to pick up passengers.drop off boxes etc.never again.I would definately give this boat trip a go.but will monitor closely where they store the life vests if the seas are up.

As I said above the last operational ferry was 3 hours in the best of weather

The airport bus people also put on a big bus service which has been running since December. I believe the trip is supposed to take 5 hours. More comfortable than a mini-van, I suspect!
