Malaysian phone allegedly used in Thailand bomb attacks
LOCAL media reports say that Thai authorities have sought cooperation from Malaysia to investigate a mobile phone found at one of the locations in Phuket where bombs rocked popular tourist spots.

Citing “security sources”, Malaysia’s national news agency Bernama reported that the suspected mobile phone originated from Malaysia. The mobile phone was partially destroyed in the blast, but the part with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s serial number printed was still legible.

The device has been reportedly handed to Malaysian police for further investigation.

Mobile phones are believed to have been used by the attackers, who are still at large, to detonate the bombs which ripped through southern Thailand over the last three days, killing four people and injuring dozens of others.

This is not confirmed but from a conversation with a Thai linked to the judiciary in the last half hour. He had just received info on his phone that one of the bombers in Hua Hin had been identified on CCTV. He works for Chevron in another part of the country and an arrest warrant was being sought.

As I said, not a confirmed source.

When I drove the dogs to the beach last night, Hua Hin was incredibly quiet on the roads. Normally, on a bank holiday weekend Saturday evening I can expect it to take me 30 minutes - I was there in 5.

Yeh that's the upside if you can call it that. Went to MV yesterday afternoon and the traffic was sparse. Usually on a weekend the only parking available at MV is on the roof. Yesterday every floor had more than 100 spaces.

Went to Makro today and once again, an easy drive there. At least Makro had some security in place (saw none yesterday in MV) and was checking all cars in and a bag search entering the building.

BANGKOK — Police announced Sunday morning they have made an arrest in connection with a wave of bombing and arson attacks in seven provinces that left four dead.

On Saturday, officers went to an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Thailand where they arrested Sakarin Karuehat with a court-approved warrant in connection with the a fire at a Tesco-Lotus in Nakhon Sri Thammarat province.

Announcing the arrest, Deputy Police Chief Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen called on the perpetrators of the deadly terror attacks, which injured 36 people to turn themselves in. Pongsapat said investigators are closer to identifying the mastermind of the coordinated attacks who they believe to be a Thai national.

He said an unspecified number of people have been taken by the military for questioning.

Pongsapat, who spoke after participating in a video conference with police from various provinces, said police have gathered various evidence including clothes, cigarette and phones.

The phones used in the attack were reportedly all from the same brand and model, Samsung Hero E1200, with labels identifying them as being purchased in Malaysia. Police are asking Malaysian authorities for assistance.

Pongsapat meanwhile said those summoned by the military should have nothing to fear. Pongsapat refused to say how many have been detained so far, but said there would be no scapegoating.

“Everyone who has been invited should not worry. Just speak the truth,” Pongsapat said. “If you mean no harm to the country, you have nothing to fear.”

Pongsapat said there were probably 10 to 20 people involved. He added that they do not believe at this time any further attacks are coming.

Extra police presence and checkpoints will remain in place for the meantime, and he asked for cooperation from the public.

Yeah, we went to Makro today as well. The vehicle check was a quick look with a mirror under the rear of the car. The check on my wife's handbag was more thorough. The guard declined to search my trouser pockets. :-)

Single mastermind behind bomb attacks, police say
Police said on Sunday that one mastermind was behind the recent wave of bomb attacks across the country.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy National Police Chief Pongsapat Pongcharoen said that police have a "clear idea" of who was behind the bomb attacks.

"The events are connected, carefully planned and carried out across many areas and masterminded by one individual," he said without elaborating on who the individual was or their motive.

The attacks on tourist destinations and official buildings across seven provinces on Thursday and Friday left four people dead and more than 30 injured. At least 10 foreigners were among the casualties.

Police released a sketch late Saturday of an individual believed to be part of the network responsible for the bombing.

Authorities also received an arrest warrant for an arsonist that set fire to a department store around the same time as the bombings. Pongsapat said that the two events were connected.

I am spending 3 days in Bangkok from Tuesday then travelling on to Hua Hin with my family. What are peoples thoughts, will things be back to normal by then?
