Jockey - Typical, have been out your neck of the woods for the last two years and not been able to find a supper and this year we're not coming until April. Anyway, have a great night!
Me - well I've to speak to one of the beasties (pleasant change from the IM) on the 25th then two on the 26th (a lunch at the school near work - fear I'll be toasting with "our other National drink" - tho' good to pass the baton to the next generation).

The late Hugh Mc Dairmid was asked what he considered the finest line of poetry written by Burns, to be.
Without Googling or whatever, does anyone know? - quite surprising considering Burns' many offerings

John called me last night to tell me that he is doing his normal Burns Supper on Friday 25th January.

Wasn't able to get much detail at the time as I was out haggis hunting and had to be very quiet so as not to scare away the little beasties.

From what I can remember, last year was an excellent night with copious amounts of alcohol. The next day was not so good.

1 cleaned sheep or lamb's stomach bag

2 lb. dry oatmeal

1 lb chopped mutton suet

1 lb lamb's or deer's liver, boiled and minced

1 pint (2 cups) stock

the heart and lights of the sheep, boiled and minced

1 large chopped onion

1/2 tsp.. each: cayenne pepper, Jamaica pepper, salt and pepper

Toast the oatmeal slowly until it is crisp, then mix all the ingredients (except the stomach bag) together, and add the stock. Fill the bag just over half full, press out the air and sew up securely. Have ready a large pot of boiling water, prick the haggis all over with a large needle so it does not burst and boil slowly for 4 to 5 hours. Serves 12.
