Dragon Boat Racing, Khao Tao *NOW WITH PHOTOS*
Dragon Boat Racing, Khao Tao *NOW WITH PHOTOS*
I'm picking up garbled messages (Thai translated to English) indicating that there will be Dragon Boat racing (amongst other things) at Khao Tao Lake this coming Sunday 13th November starting at 8am until 4pm. The reports say it will be televised from 2pm until 4pm.
Amongst the other things, I think, and Mrs BB tends to agree, it talks about an appearance by the Royal Barge. If true, that alone should make a trip worthwhile - a vessel I've always wanted to see on the water.
There is also a parade of some 89 boats in pantomime??? scheduled.
Weather permitting, I'll certainly be nipping down for an hour or 2 on my way to Sunday's football.
A couple of photos from the last time I saw Dragon Boat racing on the lake (25 Sept'16):

That's a very good point - I wonder how many of that ill-fated team still reside in Hua Hin. Actually, a really good effort - those Thai teams are good.

That is a funny thread! Only one crew photo on page 5. The other photo links are now empty, probably victim of one of the server change over's during past years. PeteBig Boy wrote:You mean this one viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4076

Two of the royal barges actually. Unfortunately not the real ones.
Suphannahong and Anantanakkharat. No idea if scale models or full size.

Re: Dragon Boat Racing, Khao Tao
Oh, that's a shame. I must admit, I was wondering how they would get it here. I suppose if they brought those huge statues here, a boat wouldn't be too much problem.

Re: Dragon Boat Racing, Khao Tao
The Thai's tell me that it's not a race but a boat procession to mark the end of the 30 days mourning and yes, the royal barge is to make an appearance. I'm definitely being told --- no race!
Re: Dragon Boat Racing, Khao Tao
As I said, I'm picking up garbled messages, so I can't confirm either way. However, the way I picked it up was racing from 8, then the procession etc, which is being televised from 2.
I'm simply trying to report the event as I understand it, by scanning the various web sites. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry. It won't be the first time, and I'll be very surprised if it's the last.

I hope you're right BB. Much more interesting if it's a race.

Re: Dragon Boat Racing, Khao Tao
The poster in the OP has both a procession of boats and longboat competition, whether competition refers to racing or best presented I couldn't say.
Re: Dragon Boat Racing, Khao Tao
I can hear the boat teams practicing on the lake from my house.

My wife just read the poster and she says although they are copies, they are full size and she, as other Thais, said there is no racing.
Re: Dragon Boat Racing, Khao Tao
I was down that way this morning, and there were 4 dragon boats tied up. No idea if they're normally there. A small funfair for kids was being set up, and a few roadside stalls.
