Potato Supplies

Went to Makro today - potatoes were 30% more expensive than usual, and I've never seen such poor quality. It took Mrs BB about 5 minutes to find a dozen acceptable spuds.

Got me wondering - is there a general problem with potato supplies at the moment?

I get my spuds at the 'Day Market'. No problem there but I can't comment on the price as I never really take any notice. I found the ones at Makro were below par a week ago, and Tesco never really have good potatoes.

Mrs BB usually goes to Makro because in her opinion (and we all have different opinions) their potatoes are the best. The potatoes I saw on sale today were the worst I'd seen since leaving the UK. It was totally out of character, and I hope a one off.

Hence my question about whether there was a supply problem.

I usually buy spuds at a local market. The price just went up from 50 baht to 65 baht a kilo. More expensive than Makro and Tesco, but clean and no waste. Veg at Tesco MV have never been any good, IMO. I was hoping the recent remodelling might have been completed with a change of fresh grocery management.

^^agreed we normally buy spuds at the local markets and they have always been good. Makro are also usually good but I remember a period last year, around the same time when the quality also deteriorated.

The small lotus on the left of Petkasam (spelling) after the going toward Pran Buri had some very big and clean looking spuds today. I didn't look at the price though.

My local market at Mom Mai on the Pala u Rd also had the worst choice of spuds I have ever seen here. Again didn't check price, but took some rooting to find enough for the Sunay roasties.

Big Boy, as someone has said, the quality of potatoes at Makro went down around the same time last year, so I'm guessing it's a seasonal thing with their supplier.

I agree with your missus about Makro usually having the best potatoes and also the best prices by far. I go through several kilograms of potatoes every month because I do all the cooking for myself and the kids, and I never bother with rice anymore, so I'm always keeping my eye on the potato landscape.

I did say, "The worst I've seen since leaving the UK." UK spuds can be very bad.

My pet hate is the usual p**s poor quality of potatoes here. In Australia most of them could not be given away for pig feed!

Villa Market usually has Russet potatoes, cost a bit more but a real potato. I think the rest of them come from China, although there may be some grown here in the north of Thailand. There is one labelled "safe potato" whatever the hell that is supposed to mean!

We may be on to something. Stuff the ugly potatoes into the scrawny turkeys and our world here may be fine again?!  Pete

I could say the same thing about rice here. In my country, you wouldn't be able to give rice away that was cooked in a rice cooker. Horrible stuff, all stuck together in a big lump.

So, I guess we just have to accept the fact that we have to eat bad potatoes, bad rice, and usually bad bread too unless you have deep pockets.

Ahh the rice! I. like most Americans), grew up with Uncle Bens rice. Easy to make and never sticky!

My first wife was Korean where I was introduced to rice cookers and stickier rice but, unlike many, I loved it! Haven't had any other since (40 years now)
