I was reading that the ground where he's going to play only holds about 37,000 (if I remember correctly), so his salary won't be coming from gate receipts. About half of it will, the rest being made up from sponsorship, profit sharing etc.
Also, it was interesting to note that there's a cap on players' salaries in the USA, however one player per team is allowed to earn more then this - Beckham in this instance.
There were a number of English and Italian clubs interested. I can understand his not wanting to return to England, but as Pete has said, quite what he's going to add to the American game is debatable. Pele, George Best, Rodney Marsh et al couldn't do it before, although interest over there in the game may be higher than it was in those days.
At the end of the day, there's always the money. I might even think about coming out of retirement for that, although my agent's received no offers - yet
