Its great making all these laws if they have someone competent to enforce them. All the police need to do is stand outside any school in town at the right time of day and they'll make 100,000 baht per day on the helmet law alone.
Again standing on corners isnt going to catch drunk drivers either, a little bit of patrolling and dare I say it WORK should pay off. All they need to do is drive up and down that road to Pranburi and pull over anyone driving like an asshole, breathalyse them and theres another 100k.
All this will do is create more stupid police corner gangs and road blocks which anyone sober or not will learn to avoid pretty sharpish.

So, if it's 500bt per person fine for not wearing a helmet, officially, wonder how much the "on the spot" fine will be? MIB could be onto a nice little earner just before month end or public holidays.

If your living budget in Hua Hin means that you can't afford a car and you have to use taxi scooters as transport..then it makes sense to buy your own helmet..anyone who doesn't just invites disaster...its your life..

Thanks for your input on that, Big Jimmy. I presume you were addressing that to me. Just want to mention though, that my budget is neither here nor there in my decision to use public transport, it would actually be cheaper to buy a bike. The reason I use public transport is because I can't drive & I'm not willing to endanger myself & others by getting on a bike & just "going for it".

Dawn,
I'm sure that your common sense, and desire to remain on this planet for a few more decades, would put you a cut above 90% of those riding motorcycles. It's the 90% you have to worry about!
Beware of the motorcycle taxi rider drinking his hooch from those little brown bottles...
I have heard a new law has been passed. It states that both people on a motorbike have to wear a helmet. If say the passenger does not then he or she will receive a 500 baht fine as will the driver regardless if he or she has a helmet on. Good I say, lets see if they actually enforce it....
I have just had a harrowing phone call from a friend who is at Petcharat Hospital, because her farang ex-husband is lying in a coma there, having come off his motorbike. He wasn't wearing a helmet apparently and he is either going to survive with severe brain damage, or more likely (by the sound of it) his family are going to allow the life support machines to be switched off. I am not naming those involved out of respect for their feelings and the delicate situation that is ongoing, but please will everybody reading this take it as a wake up call and either wear the crash helmet or stop riding motorbikes; we have all lost enough friends already.
Yet another person who i have met and liked has been taken away ,
its all so fooking pitiful, you all think your so untouchable here in Thailand riding about without a helmet on your head, it takes but a moment to reach into the basket on the front of your chicken chaser put the damn things on your head, It takes a fraction of a second to come into contact with another vehicle or the floor
WAKE UP ALL OF YOU !
You don’t look cool without a helmet you look fooking stupid, use the common sense you were born with
Maybe you look uncool with a crash hat on, who give a toss, when it comes down to it Id rather be alive and looking uncool with a crash hat, and only maybe a few broken limbs that may mend in the event of a accident
