Police launch campaign to improve Pattaya's sex-tainted image

Post by buksida »

Pattaya and tourist police on Wednesday launched a publicity campaign to improve the image of the popular resort city after it was branded the world’s sex capital or the modern day’s “Sodom and Gommorrah”, a biblical kingdom infested with vice and sex by Britain’s The Mirror tabloid.

Led by Pol Lt-Col Surasak Kanokvilas, the chief inspector of Pattaya police, dozens of Pattaya and tourist police and volunteers marched through the beach road early Wednesday morning as they asked night entertainment proprietors and bouncers to be “eyes and ears” of the police and to report to police of offences committed against foreign tourists.

They were also warned not to promote sex trade or to stage sex shows to attract customers.

The police also made spot checks of transgenders who were known to have offer sex to foreign tourists.

The publicity campaign is part of the “Happy Zone” programme initiated by Pol Maj-Gen Somprasong Yentuam, commander of Chon Buri police.

Guess the SEX trade capital of THAI is now going to be just another beach resort. Do NOT try to drive north out of Pattaya the roads will be congested with all the girls going back to work on the farm in Issan.

The Reeperbahn in Hamburg or the Red light district in Amsterdam are far worse than anything that can be seen in Thailand. In Amsterdam you also have the drugs. I don't understand why Europeans have the wrong ideas about Thailand.

There's a certain irony about the Daily Mirror getting sniffy over sex exploitation.

A few more amusing stories on this one:

Looking to dispute their city’s reputation as the world’s sex capital, Pattaya police went out Wednesday night and found a room full of prostitutes.

Despite the discovery of illegal sex workers on the second floor of a club, Pattaya’s police commander on Thursday dismissed a report in a British tabloid that approximately one in every five of its permanent residents is a commercial sex worker.

And the offending report in the Mirror:
Inside the world's sex capital: City dubbed 'modern day Sodom and Gomorrah' with highest number of prostitutes anywhere
Pattaya in Thailand has a reported 27,00 prostitutes, roughly one for every five people living in the east-coast city visited by more than a million men each year.

27,000 prostitutes and 1 Million male visitors annually to Pattaya.

Is it coincidence that Durex built their factory in Rayong or was it supply and demand?

If they really went through with changing the image many thousands of people would lose their livelihood. Not just the girls. The whole city would be a disaster. There is no reason to go to Pattaya other then it being a sex city. The beaches are terrible. Nothing else to do or see.

Sorry I don't agree there is nothing else to do or see in Patts. Wife and I go to Patts, Walking street once but never again same as for the beach along that way however there are many other things to do in and around Patts, it isn't all sex city.

That's not true. Me and the kids have been many times over the years. I'll repeat what I've said on other threads. You can spend a couple of weeks there, doing something different every day without setting foot in the 'bar area'. There's a lot about Pattaya that is not reported. Why do you think the Thais flock there? Certainly not for the sex scene!

You also forget about the numerous golf courses within 30 mins drive - which attract thousands of golfers using Pattaya for accommodation - and of course some night life, but golf is the chief attraction IMO

I agree the golf tourism business is HUGE. Now some of the gofers enjoya little desert after golf, but they come for the golf. Compared to HH the prices are more reasonable. Swarmy is an easy 60-80 mins away which helps.
