Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
another view-- the owners of the Beergarden on binthbaht which appeals to tourist couples ( good prices, good service, music not too loud, no bar girls, good people-watching) tells me that he has had a very good high season and is still busy. Find a niche mkt and you can do well, but if you are same-same its a struggle.

They like to sit on those comfortable chairs and look around, I don't see them as good consumers.
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
May be the old couples don't drink that much, but often they also live in Hua Hin and retourning to the beergarden regularly,so you don't have the volatility of high and low season...

They spend their time to comment on bar girls from UTurn. They are voyeurs.

Gotta love the media here, one day they tell us tourist figures are higher, the next day we get this ...
Strong baht tipped to hurt tourist stays
A strong baht is expected to hurt inbound tourism by driving up the cost of travel and narrowing industry margins, say public and private players in the tourism sector.
The Tourism and Sports Ministry revealed yesterday the baht in the year to date has appreciated by 14% against the pound sterling, 8% against Malaysia's ringgit, 5% against the euro and 2% against the US dollar.
Bucking the trend was the Russian ruble, up by 20% against the baht during the first five months of the year as arrivals from Russia grew by 31%.
The ministry expects the ruble to continue climbing during the second half of the year.
The baht's appreciation has been driven by internal factors.
The export sector, for example, jumped by 5.7% between January and April to a total value of US$73.34 billion.
External factors, however, like Brexit, a sluggish Malaysian economy and US policies under President Donald Trump, have also played a part.
"Appreciation increases the price of staying in Thailand, which may make some foreign tourists hesitant about booking trips," said Pongpanu Svettarundra, permanent secretary of the Tourism and Sports Ministry.
Compounding the strong baht is the ongoing air traffic blockade on Qatar, which may halt tourism from the Middle East, and affect many connecting flights from Europe.

Thailand faces losing tourists to neighbours
Expanding air traffic to the region could lead to lost travel opportunities for Thailand in the future as tourists fly directly to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV), say foreign tourism buyers at the Thailand Travel Mart Plus in Chiang Mai yesterday.
Travel to the Mekong region is growing thanks to greater air access and interest among travellers in the rapidly developing area.
Low-cost and full-service airlines from India, Singapore, Malaysia, the Middle East and China have commenced new routes and increased flights to regional destinations to meet growing market demand.
Tourism analysts from the Mekong region said it is becoming a more attractive destination because of greater air access and improved water and land transport infrastructure.
Authorities for the region are working together to define specific brand identities to promote travel to the region, with Cambodia leading in the area of heritage product management, Myanmar in local experiences, Laos in self-driving tours, Vietnam in luxury cruises and Thailand in lively metropolitan and food experiences.

Not to mention that Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar are all cheaper than Thailand ...

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I walked the beach from Khao Takiap to the center of town this afternoon and it was the least number of tourists I've seen in years, there were more old Thai ladies looking for shellfish.

The availability of flights directly into Cambodia, Laos and VN will hurt-previously visitors combined a trip to those countries, esp C and L with a Thai visit.
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
Couldn't agree more. I've lately been doing that walk in the mornings and the beach is deserted as are the sun loungers at the major hotels.
It's the same on the songthaews coming back from Takieb. There seems to be a smattering of young East Asians and Russian families here and there but to all extent and purposes town seems dead between 9-11.30 am.

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
Iam a great beach walker, but I dont find it is a great monitor of how busy the town is. On sat & sunday and Mon on long w'ends it is busy but Mom-Friday is rarely busy. On the other hand--cruising around town is now not such a good indicator--- 2 significant eating areas have been devastated. The bars are suffering-- girls going to Patty or back to the farm. I am reminded of the 'holiday towns" on the UK coast that were so busy up until the 50s before the punters discovered Spain and Portugal and are now SO sad.
